*backs away veeeery slowly*

lol...well I guess since I have NO vocals yet to my music, I'm in the clear.

However, I'd like to add that this is why we have "The Lyric" sections in our CD fold out brochures. I remember back in the 80's & 90's when I couldn't wait to buy that tape of Led Zepplin (who by the way had the longest song I had ever listened to, but it didn't matter cause they rocked)
Back then I'm sure everyone listened to the lyrics because they actually meant something, or was it due to the fact everyone was stoned?
...but then again, you had that one group of guys in the back corner saying"yeah man, I was there."
My father told me (when he was in Vietnam) the song they constantly played was "Paint it Black" and they guys would hang on every word.
I miss those days of righteous lyrics, when guys like Bob Dylan wrote about something that mattered to everyone.

It's sad that today, kids don't give a rats arse about lyrics.
It's all about the rave parties (techno, rap etc..)
Music these days..suck ..but that's my opinion.
I even hate the alternative selections..Hell, in the 90's at least Pearl Jam had something to say..now a days the lyrics we hear is either about how much he enjoyed himself in the bathroom or destroyed his girlfriends sweater. I'm so sick of hearing little skinny, whining, black eyeliner wearin', My dads pissed at me, so I'm gonna join a rock band, alternative bands.

But...that's just me...

I think that's the beauty part of art; it could take you years of work and thousands of dollars to produce your masterpiece and I could still call it crap. Or you could whip out something in fifteen minutes that will endure long after we're gone. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

Agreed.

My biggest pet peeve is song abuse.
*If you are the vocalist in a cover band, at least take your job seriously enough to learn the correct lyrics...
*If you are performing a cover song, don't cut out sections because they are TOO HARD. Work harder, get those parts down and do it right!
*Try to be accurate in technique when performing as cover. I remember watching a very good bass player (who I'd met before) performing in a classic rock band. For some reason, he decided to use slap funk techniques on Lynyrd Skynyrd, Foreigner and Pink Floyd tunes...I left. It sounded like crap, and he should have known better.
As far as sh!t being an acceptable medium for art, I agree. However, I also am knowledgeable enough to recognize the difference between an artist that is sincerely making a statement, and someone who is trying to sell me sh!t.
Reality TV is a perfect example of sh!t as an art medium...and I'm not buying it.

I totaly agree with you joseph. As a vocalist when I'm looking for a song. I will listen to every note. If there is anything I can't reach or sing in a different way that has the same effect. I will not attempt it at all. You must have respect for the music and not force it because if you do that, it WILL show up in your performance. I believe every song is an attempt to communicate. You should understand the lyrics. The music should evoke emotion that joins with the lyrics. If it is done correctly it creates a memorable communication.

Oh this is easy for me. My biggest pet peeve.. AUTO TUNE!! It's the single worst excuse for talent when a singer uses one to the extent that they get used in pop music today. As soon as I hear that robotic crap, first thing that comes to my mind is, "this person can't sing for s**t!"

As far as not being able to clearly understand what a singer is saying, it doesn't bother me too much. I've already been through so many years of listening to Korn and Tool, that it really just doesn't matter a whole lot. Their songs are killer regardless.

Think that's bad? Try Reggae. It's really hard to understand if you don't know Rasta slang. I'm getting better at it though.

We're going to be playing a show with these guys in a few weeks:

I understand every word when I hear this. It's crazy. Just over a year ago, I wouldn't have been able to understand any of it.

If you want to test yourself, check this out. You can read the lyrics and hear the song at the same time in this link.

Wow Shredd!

I clicked the link with the lyrics included, but I turned away the first time through, to test it out. Yeah, some of that was indecipherable.

:-)

Looked like they were playing for a good sized crowd.

Peeves?
1) Guitars which are so distorted that you could play any of 5 different chords - and no one could notice the difference.
This is handy when you make a lot of mistakes - just crank the distortion, make it loud, and no one will be able to tell that you have a 2nd grade music education.
.
2) Songs which repeat the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over and . . .
This is handy if you have the creativity of a cretin.
.
3) Heavy metal 'songs' which have 2 notes.
du du du du du du du du du du du - DAH!
du du du du du du du du du du du - DAH!
Combine example one with a FIRST grade education, and people will think you're really something.
.
4) Songs which have such repetitive drums that they sound like a bottling machine in a factory.
Add 4 - 5 notes at random with a synthesizer ("Trance music"), and one doesn't requre ANY musical understanding whatsoever. Just make it loop, and make it loud.
.
5) Singers who - can't . . .
:)
How'm I doing?

Just noted RM that you don't listen to Genesis? (Never did anyway?).

I think anyone who cane move a song, Pete Gabriel/Them/Yes and many others deserve at least some credit no?

Non-musicians who buy music from musicians who other musicians talk crap about.

And I use Autotune, put that in your pipe and smoke it.

RG, maybe I'm a little slow, but I didn't get that...

Not the autotune thing, I got that. I'm actually not dead set against autotune, myself. It's really a purist debate, I think. And the problem is that people use it to make themselves sound fantastic when their actual ability is pretty average. Then again, think of it from a guitar perspective: Bands like Led Zepplin, Def Leppard, The Eagles and U2 are all notorious for layering guitar parts-I don't even remember how many guitars are on Hotel California, but I think it's in double digits. Realistically, those guys have THREE guitars on stage, not 27. That means that they A: hire other musicians for their stage show; B: use backing tracks; or C: drastically rearrange their on stage sound. Why go to all that trouble, when all they had to do was NOT put all that junk on there in the first place? Because, it's all in the name of production-i.e., producing a marketable product.
Autotune is essentially ensuring that the product is commercially acceptable, just like adding all those guitars ensures a marketable sound that one guitar may not provide.

All that being said, one listen to my vocals, and it should be obvious that I rarely (I won't say never) use it. I like my performance to be pretty organic, and if I bend out of tune once in a while, so be it.

This leads me to another one of my pet peeves...SOUND LIKE YOUR RECORDING! I actually refuse to perform acoustic solo shows, because if you buy my CD, that is NOT what you will hear. I want my audience to get what they expect, and I expect to hear what has been represented to me...or something like that!
