My drummer attended music school. He's now working to achieve even greater heights than ever, by learning new styles, & he's been at it for over 4 decades.

The last great drummer I worked with was studying world beats, & was fantastic at everything he ever played. He was selling djembe drumming CD's on eBay last I heard. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him.

Yes, drummers ARE musicians, if they choose to be, just like any other musician. If you let yourself get stuck in a rut, playing the same old thing all the time, YOU, my friend, aren't a "musician," either! Music is a harsh mistress, a very demanding bee-yotch, & if you don't keep evolving, you no longer may call yourself "musician," imho, cuz you've become a "hack," or, even worse, a has-been.

Yep..

Guitarists- egomaniac control freaks
Drummers- The group alcoholic, usually owns the over-controlling GF too.
Bassists- Group stoner, always tall & lanky or short & fat, never in-between.
Singers- Raging egomaniac, always fights with guitarist, usually alcoholic and druggie and has the bitch GF, the better they sing, the worse all those problems are.
Horn players- pissed off that they are stuck playing rock in bars b/c jazz doesn't pay.

That being said a good drummer is priceless. I've had a couple and honestly, I would make sure that I had more than one capable drummer in my back pocket. I went to a festival once where several bands used the same guy throughout the night. He was the highest paid musician that's fer sher. The first place I would look for a drummer would be any local college with a music program.

He had to break a window to get the drummer out!

I asked my drummer to spell "Mississippi"...
He said, "the river or the state?"

How do trumpet players park in the handicap spots?
They put drumsticks on the dash.

Q: Why is a drum machine better than a drummer?
A: Because it can keep a steady beat and won't sleep with your girlfriend.

That isn't fair. Sorry for suggesting it. You know however cordiality hardly ever lived here, it rarely serves a focus, more serves the need or want.

Someone said this place (Forum) is infectious. Rightly so and for the wrong reasons too.
All other things seem to work ok.

Anywho and whatever, just my two cents, music is to be enjoyed.

We`re not all screwed up. I feel the same way about singer`s & guitar players! Some that is. I think it`s the level of dedication, then again I sing and play guitar :)

Apparently not all drummers suck! The drummer we hired for our gig Saturday had one day to listen to the CDs I gave him and he sounded better than the guy who had the position for six months. The second band canceled so we ended up doing two full sets and he kept up all the way. Thank you Frank, you saved our butts.

Here's one of my most favorite and most likely fictional stories with a lesson attached:

There was a drummer in between gigs, who saw an opening in a major touring country band. He figured he could play that stuff as well as the next guy, worked on his chops and some tunes for a week, and headed in for an audition.

Surprisingly, the first thing the band leader said was, "can you play a 7/4 groove?" Taken aback but a moment, he laid down a solid beat. The band leader said, "now can you play a 20 over 14 clave across two measures on the bass drum?" Now sweating a bit, he seamlessly added the stuttering bass drum beat. Adding on, the leader shouted over the din "can you alternate between flamacues and paradiddles, up and down the toms?" Years of tireless training kicked in, somehow, dimly aware of the pulse of the original beat, his hands danced around the set flawlessly.

Finally, the bandleader called out "that will do." The smiling drummer asked "do I have the job?" The leader replied, "hell no, that's why we fired the last guy."

I suck my sticks so they become supple and bendy. It takes hours of spittle and practice to do that but the rewards are great. Cameras cannot catch the movement, they just whip it up.

Don't group all drummers in one bunch!
It is not the instrument...most of the time the age of the drummer that is the problem. It's like the front man with the Yoko Ono girlfriend who kisses his butt and brainwashes him into being a legend in his own mind. Or the guitarist who shows up late thinking the world revolves around his little world. Not all players are like this.
If you want loyalty......older dogs are cool.
Yes, the philosophy is the same between musicians and the humane society.
Rock On old farts.

...A band is only as solid as the relationship between the drummer and the bass player.
You can always use a click track or drum machine....ha,ha,ha.
Don't you hate a guitar player who "wrote a new song" and recorded it with a drum track in his basement? STOP IT! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, STOP IT!
