My drummer attended music school. He's now working to achieve even greater heights than ever, by learning new styles, & he's been at it for over 4 decades.
The last great drummer I worked with was studying world beats, & was fantastic at everything he ever played. He was selling djembe drumming CD's on eBay last I heard. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him.
Yes, drummers ARE musicians, if they choose to be, just like any other musician. If you let yourself get stuck in a rut, playing the same old thing all the time, YOU, my friend, aren't a "musician," either! Music is a harsh mistress, a very demanding bee-yotch, & if you don't keep evolving, you no longer may call yourself "musician," imho, cuz you've become a "hack," or, even worse, a has-been.
