Ok so I've recently joined two new bands. One is a Tool/Incubus cover band and the other is a Soul/R&B band. I’ve never been in two completely opposite bands before but so far it’s been a blast!! I get to sing my sultry soul songs and then I get to belt out my rock aggression. My voice is holding up remarkably well and it seems like all the different types of singing actually helps. Has anyone else been in two completely opposite bands before? What was your experience?

At one point I was involved in 3 bands. 1) Alternative Rock 2) Fusion Jazz 3) Soul R&B. It was a great experience and often times, the 3 bands played shows together. I absolutely enjoyed jumping from one genre to the other and it is common in Chicago to see shows with various genre line-ups. The downside of it is playing a long set from 9pm - 2am with little breaks in the middle..... I got burnt out by the end of the gig. Especially after the Fusion Jazz set.

Oh yeah..... try being in a Christian Rock Band and a Satanic Death Metal band at once!

At one time I was in a bluegrass band, a country/classic rock/rockabilly band, & a hippie/jam/Dead-Phish-head kinda thing what also played some jazz, as well as performing solo with folk/rock/country/originals, all at the same time.

All the bands I've been in except the bluegrass one have played originals.

I was in a heavy/alt rock cover band at the same time as the one I'm in now, for almost a year.

The originals band started taking off and it all became too much, so I dropped the coverband.. but that wasn't a big deal as a background player.

One thing you should really concern yourself the most with is image-

If you have a sweet-girl or other "innocent" image going on with the R&B stuff, the incubus WILL catch up with you and tarnish advances you make if you should be picked up by a label...

It sounds crazy, but unless you have no ambition of going past regional, I'd figure out who you are and what you want to do before just 'running with it all'

What I found when being in a contemp rock band, a "Originals Smith's/Police" sound alike band and recording country style stuff for a local guy some years ago is that all it caused was traffic problems as regards gigs and rehearsals.

Mind I was younger then, we all were so the tension was where it should be in musical terms. I was hardly ever in and of course single.

I'd do that again however, but I have a conflict. I'm not a musician, I don't possess any talent, I don't have the gear and everyone and his dog has a drum machine.

The DM of course is the real killer.

I find it difficult enough to meet the commitments of one band.

Right now I would love to find a really kicktail drummer and do a 2 piece.

I play in 2 rock bands, 2 classical ensembles, 2 jazz ensembles, 1 celtic group. It's all music and varying it up strenghtens your chops. Don't allow yourself to be in a musical bubble.

Unless you like the bubble. LOL

Then you can tell the rest of them to "SHOVE OFF"..

Yea, I like my bubble very much.

I used to play in all hard-core bands. But I'm having more success in a Reggae band than in my previous bands.

Thanks for the advice Gals and Fellas! I guess the only way to see if I can handle it, is to try it. Everything’s going good so far and I'm going to continue to work on my own individual songs and music. Both bands are pretty fresh and were still working on names/set lists. Its just weird dealing with total opposite personalities from the band members. The R&B/Soul band (mostly female musicians and backup singers) is strict on drinkin/smokin before gigs, they have none of it. And I see why because I have to belt out songs by Stevie Wonder and Beyonce. I have to keep the pipes smooth. But the Tool/Incubus band goes with the flow on everything. Hell they don’t even start playing until they’ve had a case of beer in them lol but they are amazing musicians so I figure that’s their call. In a weird way I love playing two different personalities! I think all people have two different sides to them so getting to actually act and sing it out is lots of fun.
