Actually for Bass players it's an easier process than with guitar players. In general, Bass players don't use nearly as much as guitar players. I've been around my share of pro Bass players. And in a lot of cases they only use maybe a compressor, eq, and possibly a dist. pedal and that's it. In a lot of cases Bass effects can be actually detrimental to a songs backbone when They're used in excess.. you're usually better of letting the guitar players do their thing with them while you hold the rhythm.
When I was backstage watching Twiggy play for MM, all he had was a Dist. pedal. That's it.
A lot of times Bass players will buy a pedal and it gets used sparingly in only one or two songs. Heavy price to pay for that kind of use.
I will say this though..I've turned a lot of Bass players on to these pedals:

These will freakin blow your mind. They just make your rig sound like freakin Heaven. No Bass player should be without one. It's hard to describe, but it can make an average rig sound expensive. The Big Bottom feature is just f**king awesome. And the Exciter section can compress the highs to your liking. Awesome Bass pedal dude. They seem to be more effective with active Basses though. If you have crappy factory passives, there's not a whole lot any effect pedal can do to clean them up.
