What I did was buy a display pedal board much like this one:

http://xrl.us/beouht

Only it was a Digitech X-Series display. Then I went from there. The cool thing is you get a powered board, the pedals are screwed to the board. And even without the board, you'd be only paying less than $40 per pedal. The ones you don't like, you just put them back for sale. That's how I started to build mine anyway.

thats a good idea, now to find somethin like that for bass or to just see how the pedals work out, I know a couple that I wanna get like a Boss DD 5 -7, and a guyatone colorfuzz, I just don't have shyt for money right now, and no clue where I can find a job

if you can't afford a big up front investment do it one at a time:
i bought most my stuff that I didn't build off of craigslist... it's a great option for you to find stuff for cheap...
i paid $20 for the boss hm-5, $15 for the boss eq7, $20 for the big muff, $20 each for all the digitech stuff, $15 for the punkifier, $25 for the mxr zack w od, etc etc. haggle w ppul and check cl every day... worked for me!

oh, and build it yourself! most pedals only cost $20-$50 in parts and the labor you put in is all for fun so...

Actually for Bass players it's an easier process than with guitar players. In general, Bass players don't use nearly as much as guitar players. I've been around my share of pro Bass players. And in a lot of cases they only use maybe a compressor, eq, and possibly a dist. pedal and that's it. In a lot of cases Bass effects can be actually detrimental to a songs backbone when They're used in excess.. you're usually better of letting the guitar players do their thing with them while you hold the rhythm.

When I was backstage watching Twiggy play for MM, all he had was a Dist. pedal. That's it.

A lot of times Bass players will buy a pedal and it gets used sparingly in only one or two songs. Heavy price to pay for that kind of use.

I will say this though..I've turned a lot of Bass players on to these pedals:

http://xrl.us/beowo5

These will freakin blow your mind. They just make your rig sound like freakin Heaven. No Bass player should be without one. It's hard to describe, but it can make an average rig sound expensive. The Big Bottom feature is just f**king awesome. And the Exciter section can compress the highs to your liking. Awesome Bass pedal dude. They seem to be more effective with active Basses though. If you have crappy factory passives, there's not a whole lot any effect pedal can do to clean them up.

Hey, Ted. I had ordered this Digitech pedal for a friend of mine (actually it was the BP80, same pedal but with expression pedal) and after checking it out, I ordered one for me. For the money, it's a cheap way to get lots of effects for little money. What I really liked was the built in drum patterns, great for rehearsing. I'm not a bass player so haven't used it much and don't know how it holds up for live gigging, but it's got some cool sounds and they're all programmable.

Might be a cheap way to get started.

You know, I'm looking on ebay at these Xciter pedals, and they're going for dirt f**king cheap. Kinda shocking to me.

Here's another one:

http://xrl.us/beoxxt

Although it says it's an acoustic Xciter, there's really no difference between them. At one time I had both the Guitar Xciter and the Acoustic. The sounds of them were virtually the same. Kinda pissed me off at the time. I thought they were "voiced especially for" whatever. But I came to the conclusion that they're the same guts just in different colored boxes and labeled differently. Possibly for marketing purposes. My old Bass player uses my Acoustic Xciter, and our current Bass player is using my Guitar Xciter.

Whether it's red, green, or blue, they're the same.

yah shredd the stuff I play, tends to use a lot of effects, spose if I could land a keyboard player I wouldn't need all that stuff, but then again one guy on youtube who does good Tool covers has easily 20 pedals and while all of them aren't used all the time (two different variable wahs and a third on or off wah) I wouldn't mind having a lot of the stuff, I get pretty good bottom end outta my stuff right now, I'll certainly look into the pedals you suggested, and Rats, yah I do like the pedal, just wish the master volume down didn't break on the case, but I'm not a fan of stale drum patterns, I'd rather plug my cd player into my amp and try to get songs I'm stabbing at right, not that I really plan on covering most of them just good to base stuff off of

You got that right. They are pretty generic, but still maybe a little better than a metronome. :?

Here's most of my current board. My compressor is missing. I also use a Pedalsnake so I can run my time based effects into the loop of my amp.

Just like gtrs tho... (i have 13 despite that fact that you can only play one at a time) -each fx has it's own peculiar character.

I love to compare and contrast all the dif od sounds and I really feel like I've been enlightened by having access to so many unique ones.

Plus I enjoy building them so much... I'm not going to stop adding fx that way for a while.

oh, if you think my setup is big... you should see some of the boards over there at the gear page... omg makes mine look tiny.

I totally get that man. I work in graphics and don't get to play out much anymore. When I do, I bring a barebones setup, but at home...I have massive amounts of stuff. I'm currently redesigning my pedal board (for home use) and it is going to be a dual board configuration, on the first board, I'm going to have all my pre-gain/ gain pedals. (I prefer true amp distortion, but sometimes I like my distortion pedals.) On the second (smaller) board, I'm going to have just some select modulation stuff and my ISP noise gate.

I think a setup like that is great in a creative environment, but hell when performing. Also...I'm having true-bypass loop switchers made from loopmaster. Awesome products and also makes large boards easier to trouble shoot.

Love the Jem by the way.

I've been busy. I've been thinking about a new pedal board myself lately.

my plans are to implement two 3-tiered sections that join at a slight angle.

I'm going to mount a power conditioner on the bottom, as well as a reverb tank that will be controlled via a pedal.

I'm also planning on doing a switchable buffer at the front and several tb loops. and room for MORE PEDALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't waaaaaaaaaaaaaait for that MXR/ CAE power unit to come out.
I can't build anything until it does. Have you seen it?? It is a rack sized unit with 18 inputs. It can power anything from mxr pedals to the 14volt electroharminix (could be wrong about that voltage, but it's up there) to the whammy. It is a killer unit and the guy at MXR doesn't even have dimensions on it yet. There is one on the Bradshaw site though.

I'm either going to go with Trailer trash or pedaltrain pro...not sure yet.
