George,
At the time I stated listening the music of Emit Rhodes, I was already exposed to most all of the great 60's acts, including such heavies as The Yardbirds, Vanilla Fudge, Velvet Underground, Blues Project, Muddy Waters, Early Alice Cooper, Incredible String Band, and Blue Cheer, (just to name a few). Ive also been playing out, with a lot of gigs under my belt. (havent started writing songs myself until the early 80's)
The point is, for as weak a voice Emitt Rhodes my seem to have, in comparison to those other acts, in retrospect, his work still holds up, after nearly half a century. This is an example of a great artist who's work was not fully acknowledged, which sorta' fits into Philby's topic, in my opinion.
Aside from raising a family, I regard my greatest achievement as designing and building my own houses. I put Emitt Rhodes's first "home- grown" album on that level of personal achievement. I've written a few decent songs myself, but none with Emitt's level of tunesmith craftsmanship.
The fact that you can respect the high level of work of others , even though it 's "not my thang" or seems crude by today's standards, (which often don't seem so high) says a lot about your character.
Yer ol' pal
