Well, I hope this brings back some memories, anyway. Funny how BAD radio really was at one time, eh? There was a time when every time you turned on yer lil Japanese transistor pocket-sized radio, which only received AM stations, you'd hear this stuff as long as your batteries held out.

So much for the "good old days," eh?

Hey Philby,
I had one of those little radios, with a whoppin' 6 transistors!
I can recall hearin' stuff like "Hard Days Night", "Inside Looking Out",Wild Thing" You Really Got Me Going" etc. etc. (couldn't hear the bass, however)
I liked to listen to WKBW, Buffalo's 50,000 watt A.M. station. They ROCKED!

Anyways... One hit wonders? ..check these guys out. (I saw them at the East Stroudsburg University field house back in 70, and they kinda sucked, but I still like 'em anyway. ( Ol' Lesley was definitely the BIGGEST guitar wielding rocker at that time! )

Back around 69 or 70 there was a dude who recorded a couple of solo albums. He wrote the songs, sang them , played all the instruments himself, AND engineered the whole thing, without the aid of any,(then nonexistent) digital equipment.

If you're guessing Paul Mccartney, you are close, but no cigar.

The cat's name was Emitt Rhodes, and his first self titled album is literally one of the finest collections of awsome little pop tunes ever recorded, in my opinion.

He has been called "The One Man Beatles" and for good reason.
He made Sir Paul's first solo effort sound like a Capt. Scott original.

I wore out my cassette copy many decades ago, but through the magic of YouTube, found some of his music.

Remember, this is a pioneering work of genius, since, to my knowledge, no one had ever produced a 100% solo album of this quality previously.

Check it out and see what ya think. (Disregard the video, the music is the thing)

I've heard this cat before. Not my thang, but one hell of a deal for a one man show.

George,
At the time I stated listening the music of Emit Rhodes, I was already exposed to most all of the great 60's acts, including such heavies as The Yardbirds, Vanilla Fudge, Velvet Underground, Blues Project, Muddy Waters, Early Alice Cooper, Incredible String Band, and Blue Cheer, (just to name a few). Ive also been playing out, with a lot of gigs under my belt. (havent started writing songs myself until the early 80's)

The point is, for as weak a voice Emitt Rhodes my seem to have, in comparison to those other acts, in retrospect, his work still holds up, after nearly half a century. This is an example of a great artist who's work was not fully acknowledged, which sorta' fits into Philby's topic, in my opinion.

Aside from raising a family, I regard my greatest achievement as designing and building my own houses. I put Emitt Rhodes's first "home- grown" album on that level of personal achievement. I've written a few decent songs myself, but none with Emitt's level of tunesmith craftsmanship.

The fact that you can respect the high level of work of others , even though it 's "not my thang" or seems crude by today's standards, (which often don't seem so high) says a lot about your character.

Enitt was way cool, HJ! I dunno if I ever heard that before, even though I grew up in that era. Don't remember it, anyway. Thanks!

I never understood the Pressed Rat & Warthog thing...maybe it was the accents. LOL
