I can understand the "boring" comments. Listen to the backing music - it's 4/4 and never changes. Malmsteen has some of the best abilities ever, but he doesn't do anything even remotely interesting with them. He's locked into standard rock conventions. Which seems weird, given that he's 'classically trained'. Where's all the time signature changes? Where are the interesting compositions and thematic work?

I'd much rather listen to Petrucci's work.

Hehe Even I can appreciate that joke.

I'd kill for his technique. It's flawless. Mine sucks. I'm too tense when I play lead. Petrucci's precision seems unreal.

The second link is the end solo to Octavarium. It's my argument to people who think Petrucci is all technique and no emotion. I think that solo resonates with me perhaps more than any other piece of guitar work I've ever heard. It has more impact after you've sat through the entire 20-minute piece, but even isolated it's a powerful piece of work.

As for Vai - love some of his work. He has always been creative; I'd say the antithesis of Malmsteen when it comes to creativity. But Vai tends to get lost in an overuse of weird effects and the crutch of rock sensibilities. I've often wondered what Vai could have accomplished in a band like Dream Theater, where he would have been pushed to expand on his ideas.

I don't know why Petrucci became the center of all this attention, but it really does't get old.. I can watch these over and over and over and just chuckle til I get up for another drink.

Thats a funny vidieo ,I wish I could find a good video of VIA wisper and prayer to post but all the ones ive found the sound qualty is like home vidio. If you have never heard it its verry mellow and creative. PEACE.

I think you state the main difference between the two artists. Vai isn't as technically "precise", and john petrucci, though he does bend strings, doesn't really BEND strings. there's a difference between bending half a note variance like an epilectic sheep versus bending a string a whole note and half over and over like your trying to rip it off the bridge. I prefer the latter, it sounds like you have a vested interest in the destruction of your guitar But really, I do like them both! They just have different styles is all.

Yngvei is a classical musician and he loves arppeggiated music, Steve Via is a musical acrobat and he was Frank Zappas Little Italian Virtuoso, and in my Very Experienced Opinion exstremely melodic.
Joe Satriani is absoulutly in the same league.
I have a special attachment to Mr. Eric Johnson because he is a fellow Texan and a definite virtuoso.
John Petrucci is also on of my favorites and also an acrobat, but in my humble opionin lacking the discipline to play the blues
But I also adore the music of Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons, Tony Emanuel, Los Lonely Boy's, and Johnny Cash!

So how many of these guy's are really into classical music and arppegiated music? only one in my humble opinion the Maestro Yngvei
