Mexico. 5-string was better than the 4, but strings to close on the 5. seen alot of 4-strings with a bad 'A' string, couldnt get good tunning. String tone uneven. I think Ibenez is a better bass at half the price. They at least use a wider guage of spaceing the strings on their 5s. Hope SWR keeps quality with Fender.

Yea for me for me I found the opposite the 5 sucked and the 4s played better and their necks warped less. It comes down to the mfg process. It seems like Fenders is a bit lose on the tolerances so it's the luck of the drawn on getting a great bass. The G&Ls and music mans seem to be more consistent.

I used to pooh-pooh Ibeenhad basses but then I got a cheapie bolt on neck one to take to the EU and dam if that bass didn't kick butt. The neck was not this bloated thing but a nice and slim and the action was great. For the value I'd say Ibenez bass are worth it. Though I'd probably buy the USA made Carvin.

I have never lucked into a good GL, higher end fendres. I like the crisp tone that the jazz has though. Carvin is out of my league,[money wise].for now. Know that I would like carvin. And I can see staying away from the cheaper fenders. I have a 1980,81. Kramer-Aluminum neck[truss]. wood inserts-Grain, Ebony fingerboard. I just dont know about it yet! Hopeing to find a good full tone. Not as of yet though. Do you know anything about the kramer basses? Would help. Good or Bad info.

OMG My first bass was a Kramer because of Dave Hope from Kansas. Am I dating myself? If you can get past the neck heaviness then thay are great. YOu NEVER have to worry about the neck warping. I had the basic model but later put to J bridge pickups in for that farty tone. Great basses. They are one of those basses that sound even better wit ha pick.

From what I can tell the stock Carvins are about the same prices as the American Fenders

i've played some Fenders that really suck, and i've played som really cheap Washburns fo $100 bucks that have kicked butt.

every guitar is different in some way, even when they are identicle, and that's when it's easiest to tell.

I would have to say that for the money Music man has performed everything I've needed in and out of the studio. I have 26 basses, from jazzes, "P"'s, Alembics and the rest. The Music Man can cut through most anything I need. I've performed Classic Rock, Country, Blues, and Jazz. It hangs in there with it all. I have a MM-5 and a Sterling. I love them both. Ken

My Pedulla Rapture sounds like a Fender Jazz on steroids and has one of the tightest B-strings among 34-inch scale basses. There are many great basses made today, some are pricey and some not. You can have a great bass in a Tobias for $5,000 or in a Ibanez for $500. I have owned two Fender Precisions (loved them), a Rickenbacker 4001 (love/hate relationship), a Gibson EBO (hated this bass after Berry Oakley told me "man, that's not a bass"), a Music Man (loved it), a Mosrite (hated it), an Ibanez GR200 (liked it a lot and it was inexpensive), a Harmony hollow body (got a lot of compliments on the sound of this $50 bass). I now own the above mentioned Pedulla (really love it), a Schecter Stiletto Custom-5 (I have to boost the mids [EMG pickups] on my Sansamp RBI but the 35-inch scale makes the B-string thump), and a Fender Jazz 4-string with Dimarzio pickups (love this funky bass but don't get to play it much ... my band prefers the 5-strings, they fill an all-guitar band better). Having played since 1964 I have gotten to thump on a lot of basses. My favorite bass is always the one in my hands at the moment I am playing ... expecially if it is something funky. (You may hear the Fender and the Pedulla on my Bandmix page.) Rock on.

i LOVE Thunderbirds! Gibson or Epiphone. they're grat for a heavier sound really, but i play lots of heavy music so they work great for me. alot of people dislike Thunderbirds because they're so heavy sounding and alot of the time muddy, but hey, John Entwistle played Thunderbirds and "Fenderbirds" and he kicks butt!

My dream bass is a Warwick. Played a 5-string Corvette Standard and was one of the few basses where the B string didn't feel "Tacked On" and there was just as much life and snap as in the EADG strings.

My current bass is a Yamaha RBX 775 which, after getting all the neck issues resolved, is a fairly competent bass though I do not like the rocker switch or the "Bass Boost" (worthless) feature.

Been playing a Fender Precision special (late 70's or very early 80's model) solid walnut body, active electronics. Someone told me that this particular bass has a jazz bass neck. Don't know if that's true or not. Haven't really played many other bass guitars. Everybody has a different feel for an instrument. What works for one person may not work for another. When I went to buy a new bass amp a number of years ago I went to a bunch of music stores and told the salesman to plug me into every amp they had. I had my back turned so I could not see which amp I was playing through, this was kind of a blind taste test of amps. I kept doing this until I found what I thought was the best tone. Ended up buying a PEAVEY TNT, one of the least expensive amps out there. Other people have played my bass guitar through my amp and it sounds LIKE sh*t. Every individual has a different feel on an instrument. To me that's one of the most interesting things about music: the guitars and amps different people use. You have to keep trying different combinations until you find the one that FEELS the best and SOUNDS the best. Good luck...fisherman bob

I heard that years ago, Stanley Clarke had an Alembic stolen in N.Y. Wish I found that one at a pawnshop. Alembic has always been a bass that I wanted to have. One of these days maybe.

I love my Peavy Foundation 4, but would love to get a classic upright. Nothing can compare to the sound of an upright. :)
