Hi I'm Paleo Pete and I'm a guitarholic

I used to get in trouble in school for humming songs I was learning, drumming on the desk or practicing fingerings on a book or something. When the tendon going to my left ring finger was severed and later surgically reconnected, I was trying to play guitar 2 weeks after surgery even though the doctor strictly ordered me not to touch a guitar until the cast came off. I have hell going to sleep at night both because the dogs next door and the little guitar player inside my head won't shut up. I have a tune I recently wrote running through my head right now making it difficult to concentrate on my typing.

I own 9 guitars in working condition including a lap steel and two in need of repair, two saxes, a Wurlitzer Electronic Piano, two xylophones, a flute, a clarinet and 4 amps, plus a 5th amp in need of repairs and several stompboxes. I still brake for pawn shops and music stores. Never enough guitars, I'm always looking for another one.

I play air guitar when I can't get my hands on a real one. I pick up toy guitars in department stores and try to make them actually sound decent. (It can be done, I've done it more than once.)

I have no life, I have very few friends, sometimes I'm barely functional. But as long as I have a few guitars, I'm OK...

I feel better already...

Not a chance. I've been afflicted with GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) for quite some time now. My guitars and amps all came from pawn shops, flea markets and yard sales. (Except for my Super Reverb, which was payment for 3 hours fixing a relative's computer) I stop and look even if I don't have $3 in my pocket. Going into pawn shops I ignore jewelry, TV's, tools etc and go straight to the guitar racks.

The storm blowing across Louisiana last night knocked my electricity out, I was playing [on acoustic] a song I wrote to an Audacity click track, trying to get my timing down. I lit a candle and kept playing without the click track. I went to someone's house a few days ago to fix a broken shower, he had a guitar (First Act POS) and keyboard, I immediately asked "Who's the musician?" and for the next half hour we were talking music and listening to his daughter's recording.

It's a disease I tell you...a debilitating malady...we should be on medical disability forever. (more time to look for guitars...none of that day job thing) I guess the only thing I haven't done is let a pawn shop run make me late for a gig...but it sure is tempting sometimes, especially if I'm out of town and there are all those pawn shops and yard sales I've never been to...it's really hard to pass them up. But I persevere, I've always been determined not to let it interfere with the only thing that means more to me...

Playing guitar...

As a side note, one of my more devious quirks is tuning a guitar to open G or open D, playing it for a few minutes then moving on to another one, then watching the looks on other people's faces when they pick it up and find out that barre A chord just doesn't sound right...I've never seen anyone yet figure it out and keep playing, I'd love to run across just one person who would realize it's open tuning and know how top deal with it. The only person I've met in a music store who did know a little about open tuning tuned the guitar he was playing to open G and jammed with me for a few minutes. That was pretty cool...
