yeah, it's more about emotional relationships with the bandmates rather than musical prowess.. :D

but I must add, most if not all bands I have ever played with, had basic outline charts with time signature at left with the backslash symbol in front of C D whatever to designate ex.: 3/4 C / F would give you two beats of C and 1 beat of F

% = repeat symbol

etc. etc. but generally if your ears are acquainted with the tune the chart is not necessary..

you know...it doesn't have to be one or the other, right?

life is full of compromises and we're always making decisions and choices about what we're willing to put up to have ________.

but i tell you what...i presently play in three long running band situations, one of 24 yrs, another 10 yrs, and one coming up on 4 yrs.

everyone of them includes top notch players and top notch PEOPLE. am i lucky to be in THREE bands like that? HELL YES!

i know all too well that isn't always the case. sometimes ya gotta suck it up and you have to deal w some putz who's in the band. and on the other side of that too...there were times when i needed the bread and played in groups of great folks...who weren't musically all that happening for a paycheck. compromise.

and that speaks to that point...how much are you willing to deal with and compromise.

my point....don't let anyone tell you it's all about "emotional empathy w bandmates" over the music. or vice versa.

it has to be about both, or you won't stay happy very long.

I just want to know what kind of connections one of them has that can get you 4 gigs a week at $750 or more a night? (to give you that $150-200 per man you mentioned) I know some areas of the country pay a lot better than others (like Haley's Houston area), but the whole country isn't like that and you've got to tour (at least past your local county) to get 4 gigs a week consistently these days, unless you are 'house band' at a tourist stop. Is that it - a Branson place you're heading for?

My band often has to transpose. I missed one and played the whole song in a the wrong key (thankfully, it was rehearsal) but I told them not to sweat it, I was doing jazz improve! 8)

Transposing is part of life with singers. We have two female and 1 male the one singing lead gets to call a transpose if they wish. The guitarists reach for their capos and I put on my thinking cap.

I admit it is very annoying when a cool open Emin sound is pushed to Eb where you work twice as hard for less return.

To my horror I've found that now there are capos for bass guitars (disgusting!) and pianos (huh?)

Mike, since you mentioned "Haley's Houston" I have to chime in. :D I find it interesting that my hometown is doing so well, always has! You can do that all day everyday down here in this Conservative state, you know in spite of the hits we continually take from YOUR POTUS. In fact you can do that in San Antonio, Austin, Beaumont, Dallas, Galveston, Texas City, Lamarque, Kemah, Seabrook. I just wish the rest of the country could start doing well so the homeless people from liberal states would GO HOME! Just sayin! :D

I don't know about Austin - I heard that there are a shitload of bands there, so the $$ is much less (in other words same as around here). At the larger (not huge) clubs around here, they are all booking two bands Thursday through Saturday nights (supposedly to get in fans of both) and charging $10 cover charge, but the bands, because they're only playing 2 sets/2 hours each, end up getting $200 to split between them. If one is 'bigger' (i.e. higher draw), they might get $300 for their 2 sets.

dayne, those guys are are pretty damn rough. and then there's you. you had me w the very first time your pick hit the strings! duuude, your tone is killin' and i really dig your feel and choices. you gottit going on man!

i feel bad that if this is really what you wanna do, playing this style of music w players at this level.... and not the hipper and more interesting stuff that we all write and like to do ( and don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong w playing this kind of music... i do it plenty at the truckstop.....but they're all REALLY good players!) ...and again man...you sound GREAT playing there.

what i'm getting at is that i'm surprised you haven't been able to find a dozen bands in your area doing this at this level. i know you were looking for more qualified and more adventurous players playing more adventurous music.

the singer is more than a little pitch challenged, no? and the rest of the band hooks up like three guys in three seperate rooms, or houses, or zip codes! you, on the other hand are admirably steering the ship thru some murky waters...but the singer (as most musicians... whatever their level do... we all gravitate towards the person in the band with the time/groove sense that we can most identify with... and hook up best with) he's signed on to your wagon and singing with YOU.

dayne...you sound great man. and i'd gladly sit by and listen to the rest of those guys to hear you play some more.

so...ya got some more to share?
are you really sure?
is there nothing to convince you otherwise?
our followers think we are the best thing since sliced bread, when it comes to a band that can get them dancing.. that's all I hear, is how great it is, for a band to actually play dance music? you must realize the performance was recorded on a smart phone sir.. thanksr

In my recent experience 'dance music' means the beat is fairly fast and the alcohol is flowing freely. All it takes is a couple of women to start it. Sh*t, I get people dancing to my solo acoustic songs sometimes!
