See, you have a follower way down South.
I'm already on to a good deal of your #s.
really???? duuuuude!
it's JAZZ....the only thing similar is the head! i'm not comparing our $hit to Coltrane or Miles or any of the jazz greats, but that's kinda like saying "well, i don't need to hear this live version of "____" because i heard them do it on their record!!!!
if you haven't already checked it out, the video performances of "Squirel Curfew"...."Gone Goodbye"...."Iguana"....they're entirely different performances than previous versions. Bill tends to play much the same, but Monty and I... we're in the moment playing off each and trying different things all the time.
We all have our "vocabulary" and pet phrases, pet moves, and of course....just the way we play, but i try to approach every performance of a tune differently, and certainly try to make every solo different from the last ( not saying they're anything brilliant, or ground breaking...just that they are.......DIFFERENT).
for instance....during my solo on this live performance of "Squirrel Curfew" i got into this chromatic bit of biz that i'd never played on that one, and Monty is right there with me! (and i KNOW you're a fan of chromaticism)...so, taking on a pass (if you did) on that most recent live take because you heard our studio take on it ( w clarinets that are absent here!) ...well, maybe you missed out on something. or maybe NOT!!!!
it also occurs to me...that i improvised a totally new intro for "Squirrel" to set up the tune at this gig as well....you didn't hear THAT on the studio take! ( i love how just playing some simple but different voicings and inversions of a Cm7 chord can actually sound half way interesting on a vibraphone!)
for me, that's what attracts me to playing improvisational music. not just playing a bunch of random things that can go in any direction at any time ( though that CAN be fun) but finding something interesting, and DIFFERENT each time you approach a structured tune and change things up WITHIN the "boundaries" of a (mostly) set and finite form.
that's why people who dig jazz can listen to yet another version of "Giant Steps" or "Seven Steps To Heaven".....cos it's always (supposed to be) different.

but it's all good my brutha! i do appreciate the "fan-age" and you taking the time to check stuff out and weigh in w positive words.
