I saw/heard Alan Doyle (of Great Big Sea fame, a Newfoundland band) playing last week, he played a Godin elec-acoustic mandolin. Didn't sound as good as an acoustic mando with pickup to my ears - too piezo-y.

i'm not a fan of those Goda-lins. quite quacky and the cpl i tried played awful. no acoustic tone (unlike my nylon string Godin Multiac) and just a terrible feel to 'em. part of the problem is they're flat top instruments (like the Ovation and Applause mandos)....every flat top mando i've played or heard sounded like a little guitar. no wood. no woof.

now, when i'm playing that solid body mando w a single coil magnetic p/u....i don't expect it to sound like an acoustic mando. not what i'm going for. and really that would be like expecting a strat or tele to sound like an acoustic gtr. both my Flatiron and Rigel have K&K piezos in 'em and they have very little quack to 'em. i can plug 'em right into the board or amp w/o needing a preamp to goose the tone. (of course there are times when i do use either a Fishman or Baggs pre to have some more control over EQ and to notch out offending frequencies)

yeah, but after three sets we have to hightail it out before the authorities show. we try not to push our luck. 8)

it's ALL greek to me! i wonder if that's the double course strings that led you there (Greece). not too far fetched at all you going there.

really what i'm going for is a Tres vibe. (Cubano)
i'd love to pick one of those babies up, but for some reason you just don't find many of them in Mid MO!

I've never played a Godin nylon string. A friend has a Godin steel string that he added a lipstick pickup to, but I don't particularly like the sound. It's halfway acoustic and/or halfway electric, but never fully either. Intonates terribly, too.

love mine. i suppose it's possible i got lucky w my nylon string Multiac....or perhaps your friend was unlucky and got a dog. i've only played one other besides mine....and like mine, the intonation was spot on. i use about 75-90% of the internally mounted condensor mic and just a little of the piezo for "cut".

If you're interested, talk to our buddy. He can tell you if you're getting the real deal.

yeah, i've got stuff on the list that precedes purchase of a tres....something i'd have only limited use for. i know there's plenty of "ethnic" instruments avail on the interwebs but i'm pretty leery of buying instruments w/o being able to inspect/play/hear them in person.

it looks like i'm gonna be trading my '96 tele for an '01 Guild Starfire III....cos i NEED ONE MORE GUILD IN MY LIFE!!!!

'01 is the last year they were still making them at the Westerly RI factory. I've got a '66 Starfire II (similar to the III minus the Bigsby) that i love.

The Greek inflection? Just the first part of the melody line. Then it drifts off into another place.

yeah, i getcha. full disclosure...i've listened to a lot of greek music and we are what we eat. that's an old tune of mine that's probably been around a good 30 yrs. we just recently started playing it and we're still finding our way trying out different arrangements pretty much every time we play it. (usually me playing guide and tour director during the performance... "OK, B section now!")

On my budget, i'd easily just settle for re cutting the nut and bridge on a cheap acoustic guitar.

Nice elektromandolining PG!

well, i do know a little about tres....it's after dos and before quatro, right?????

i tried going that route (recutting the nut and fashioning a new bridge/saddle on an el-cheapo 12 string i had. no (cuban) cigar! sounded like a cheap 12 string.

thanks for the generous compliment!

thanks, jook....the check's in the mail! (take your time before you try to cash it though)

like i said, that's an old tune that came to life on bass. i'd come up w that opening rhythm vamp on bass and didn't tie that melody to it til later on.

re. the melody...basically what i'm doing is just hanging a C Maj7 arp over an Am7 chord.....starting and ending the phrase on "B", the M7 note (of Cmaj7), though often as not i'll also begin the line on the A note (root of Am7....or 6th of CM7)....it's one of my pet and fall back moves. in the end...Cmaj7 or Am9, same kettle of crustaceans. 8)

to me the real interest comes from the B section when it moves to that BbM7#11 chord. (that chord has been berrry, Berrrrrrrry good to me!)

BbM7#11 like this: 1 1 3 2 3 0
