I know many folks who have ice dams on their roofs. I've seen them 10" thick; and ice is HEAVY.
.
The thing about ice dams, is they affect the natural water flow. Instead of water just flowing over and off the shingles, the water backs up and flows up underneath the shingles. From there it flows through the roof, into your house.
That's when you get water stains and collapsed ceilings and shorted out wiring and mold and such.
Imagine installing a faucet in your bedroom, or closet or living room, and just turning it on, (with no drain) and leaving it on 24 hours a day . . .
Ice dams are pretty serious.
