I have outside drainage pipes that filled up solid with solid ice. They keep the water from entering the basement (so far so good).
.
I know many folks who have ice dams on their roofs. I've seen them 10" thick; and ice is HEAVY.
.
The thing about ice dams, is they affect the natural water flow. Instead of water just flowing over and off the shingles, the water backs up and flows up underneath the shingles. From there it flows through the roof, into your house.
That's when you get water stains and collapsed ceilings and shorted out wiring and mold and such.
Imagine installing a faucet in your bedroom, or closet or living room, and just turning it on, (with no drain) and leaving it on 24 hours a day . . .
Ice dams are pretty serious.

All the ice is gone now around here from last week's sun and warm temps. Of course we had more snow yesterday.

The piles of snow around my house shrank several feet in the last 4 - 5 days.
Many of them had been 10 - 12 feet tall (stand on someone's shoulders; yeah that tall).
I think the average pile of snow around my apartment is now 6 - 9 feet tall.
. . . sure was muddy for a while . . .
