Vampier wrote:True Artistic expression once mature is individual and pure expression from the Artist. Tribute "Tragedies" in my humble opinion are pathetic, immature and without any redeeming qualities. I however see nothing wrong with playing the odd cover from someone who has influenced you and whose music you admire, which in itself could be considered a "Tribute" I guess. But an entire concert emulating someone else sounds to me like childish "playing and dressup". I think that these kind of "bands" are even lower rung than being a commercial jukebow or cover band. At least in a cover band doing a load of different songs by different individuals and bands stretches one and is in some ways excellent training and experimentation ... but not always. I know that some will take issue with my views upon this matter but that is the beauty of the Forum is it not.

nice to see you jumping in here vamp. i wish you'd do that more often.

and would ya look at that....there IS stuff we agree on! (hell, that doesn't surprise either of us, right?)
i quite agree w the views you stated and stated well. thanks for weighing in. 8)

Planet Guy ... I thank you. In Truth, we most probably afgree on much more than we disagree on and this encompassing not only music. Sparring keeps one in shape and each is entitled to their own viewpoints as i know you are well aware of. We are all wired differently and now it seems that there is a growing and very real threat through DNA manipulation, corruption and such to make us all the same indistinct morlock.
I am no Jazz musician but I respect those who really are and because of their skill and knowledge and chops can pull off some truly amazing music. I have always felt that music should be manifested from within and Jazz and Rock allows for this. The classical thing is entirely another level I feel and in the opposite direction in some ways. It requires a degree of discipline that most do not have and a spirit of working together, and is definitely more strict. there are good reasons for this and Classical music is in a class all by itself I feel ... when done properly.
To be in Stuttgart and hear an extraordinary Symphony play is one of the high points of my meager life ... knowing their history, the history of the music, the rareness of it all ... was truly inspirational on a nano level ... sound meeting spirit and causing physical and mental and even philosophical reactions. I shall always remember it. I adore David Bowie but he in Concert admittedly is a much different thing but in my opinion it does not hold a candle to what I witnessed in Stuttgart. But that is just me and the way I am wired and we can thank our Ancestors for that. Have a nice Holiday and enjoy your family, friends and of course your music.

you're most welcome. i've no doubt that as you said we DO agree on much more than we disagree on".

yes, i quite agree with that too. the only thing i wish to weigh in on is your comment of "working together". yes, it's true this is paramount for classical musicians to pull off a breathtaking performance.....but one of the many things that draws me to jazz, and impresses me about those who play it well, is how very well jazz musicians must work together and trust one another. being in the moment and "conversing" articulately and saying interesting things in interesting and colorful ways....i'd think that'd really appeal to you as i know you take pleasure from expressing yourself. (no intended cut or slight there.....actually it's meant as a compliment)

yes, that truly must have been amazing and an awe inspiring, life affirming experience you'll carry with you the rest of your day (which i hope are many). Thank you for the sincere well wishes and please know i wish nothing but he same for you and your's.

my wife and i are readying ourselves to bid farewell to Missouri's cold weather for the month of december. we're renting a house on the beach of Anna Maria Island FL and have been quite busy readying our home for some friends who'll be staying here in our absence. we leave tomorrow. i plan on loading the van w my vibes, a gtr, a bass, mando, and an amp. i've already lined up some people to play w while we're down there. even a cpl of gigs! at this point in my life, i know i'd lose whatever tenuous grip i have on what passes for mental health these days if i had to go a month w/o playing music!

i'll likely not be checking in here at BM much....but let me say that's it's very nice taking a break from our usual sparring! please take care of yourself and your wife in the upcoming "holiday season".

Wintering in Florida, eh? Please go to Ocala and take in the early bird show. I hear they tear it up with their rendition of Lay Down Sally!

I saw the Baltimore Symphony play the 1812 Overture in an outdoor pavilion. It was awe inspiring. I'd seen Zep and the Who at the same venue but holy smoke - when the cannons starting firing a thunderstorm broke out and it was as if God himself wanted the show to go down just right.

I'm undertaking something right now that frankly is over my head, beyond my competence and very expensive to produce. I have no idea where I'll get the people I want and the money. I may even fail! 8)

Yet there is something grabbing me that makes me want to do something I haven't done before and do it so well that I'll honor God with the finished product.

I know that sounds kinda hokey. Yet I reckon there is a point where if you keep doing the same thing over and over, you might miss a chance at something better.

cheers guys
Talbot

Once again I thank you very much and please enjoy whatever you undertake down there. Thank you for the clarification although I took no offense. It is quite amusing is it not because of our dubious "gifts" of innuendo and back handed sardonic compliments we actually run the risk of being misunderstood when we are serious. I understand what you state about working together in a Jazz environment and I concur. In the Classical sense I feel that it is almost military in its precision and quite obviously a different beast.
I am with you completely on the karaoke thing. Here it is like some demented tragedy and rivals being a level of Hell that Dante and Virgil seem to have missed. It is however an interesting study in how that stuf called liquid courage can be misused and abused.
Have a good trip to, there and from. Of course I can not imagine how you will be able to get by without getting on BandMix .... Ha. Steph

Talbot … that experience sounds truly magnificent, the fact that there were cannons … EXCELLENT. Obviously it was good enough to "inspire" and "impress" someone "upstairs". Right up you alley in every respect I think.
Your "undertaking" I feel should better be referred to as your PROJECT … less ominous and not vampire speak. To me it sounds like a great idea and the timing seems good as well. It is good to push yourself no matter how old … otherwise what is the point of being.
I understand expensive but contrast this with the value of conception … putting it together and the performance or finished product. It will be priceless in comparison and that is not even addressing the personal growth, frustrations, anger and range of other emotions you will probably experience. As males and Artists, doing this kind of thing is as close as we can come to "giving birth" to something. My last Project took me two full years to realize not 9 months.
In mu opinion if despite all the predictable pitfalls there is "something" which drives you upon a truly spiritual level then by all means do it. Being inspired and brave and courageous is not at all hokey and is to be admired, encouraged and supported.

Fortune favors the Bold and I am not speaking of money here especially now at this moment in this world. Those who are fortunate to be able to work with you on this are to be envied. Be a leader, an inspiration and a human.

Mark - safe travels and enjoy your time in Fla.

Correct comments regarding classical music - it does take a different mind- and skill-set to do it well. There is no deviation from the score allowed - whether it be 1 person in a piano concerto and a whole orchestra, but there is still room for expression and feeling. I usually get down to Boston once a year to see the Handel and Hadyn Society orchestra, and have seen some very gifted performers, but the Beethoven symphonies are the real movers for me.

Oh, what were we talking about? Tribute bands! I've had no desire to go see the traveling off-Broadway Beatles tribute 'Rain', although I have heard good things about it. Same thing with the Las Vegas 'Love' tribute. The Zep, Floyd and Journey and other tribute bands that play around here regularly - meh, no interest. I've never heard of a Kinks tribute band, they're one of the Brit invasion bands that people have forgotten about, it seems. I wish JimmyDanger luck with that project!
