In spite of all the above ... if you really get fed up and can't take it anymore ... you could trade it in for a setar, the instrument from which the sitar is descended from and named after.

Why would anyone get confused? The name means "three strings". The setar has 4 strings, the sitar has over a dozen

Anyway, a setar is easier to tune.

I really think you should go for playing jazz fusion a 12 string universal pedal steel guitar Planetguy! If that gets too confounding, then you can always change the tuning and say a prayer to Jesus that you'll end up sounding like these guys!

Come on Vinny... At least Mark has posted some cool music. I appreciate the ridiculosity of your comments... The least you could do is approach the reality and physics of real instrumentation. We are trying to take you seriously. Please give us a reason.

vinny, as it happens i've already made plans to come back in my next carnation (or is it a posie?) as a geeky, steel playing nerd.

fusion? yeah...that might be cool but to my ears....a steel, playing western swing and straight ahead jazz just sounds TOO good to waste time on any other endeavor.

as for universal tuning on a 12 string....it's all i can do to keep my little brainbox wrapped around C6 and "lap G" on my 6 string lap steels.

i do see the appeal of the combined (E9 and B6?) universal tuning but yee-ow, that's a lot to grok...esp when you start adding in all the pedals and knee levers.

thanks for taking us to church w the "sanctifyin' steel" videos. perfect for a sunday morning. i just wish those church goers weren't quite so staid and reserved.

here's some cool straight ahead stuff played on steel....

I do not think it is such a ridiculous suggestion to assume that Mark is capable enough of a musician to handle a pedal steel guitar ... we agree that he is a great musician with some cool music posted, why would you have such doubts regarding his potential?

JIm Cohen is great!

Here Dave Easley takes it a bit little further out there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H35QpuAfIFw

.. and Susan Alcorn to bring in Sunday morning with a more Catholic modern sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZOD5KXYOY8

For swing and trad jazz a single 10 C6 set up with half a dozen pedals or so would be all you need. Don't be too intimidated by pedals, they are easier to deal with than doing bar slants on a lap steel.

Get an old Fender 1000 if you don't like knee levers, and if you like to dance!

You are enjoying this too much.... :?

This would be one case in particular, where having your call for support outsourced to India would be a good thing!
If you have no access to a teacher you will need to exercise extraordinary resourcefulness to learn all the details. You are in luck that so many in India are online ... there is quite a bit of info available, so much so that may be where you are getting confused. Also this instrument was designed to play a system of music mostly unknown to you.

No Argument there!

Just tune to c# for now if you are breaking strings. You will have to tune, tweak and reweak it settles.
Here is a tutorial from a store located in Texas http://www.buckinghammusic.com/sitar/sittut/btut.html

Already ran across this site. Its got helpful facts about the general nomenclature of the strings...and how to maintain them. But I could not find anything about tuning them... (Though I did find some other sites)

Here is a nice lady to explain it to you ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsJoOE9x8s4

Already ran across this one... In fact, it was here, where I popped my string. SHe is very good an knowledgeble. But she doesnt really explain the scale.
I would not call her a very good teacher.

Here are some hi quality strings http://www.ebay.com/itm/Batish-Pro-Indi ... 27ca46dbd3
or

I have a Vendor in Toronto (who can provide the strings). I just need to talk to that guy...
