Pfffft! I think you just did.

Mike I agree 100% with Paul's critique. I think you have a songwriting talent yet the performance still needs some work IMO. Vocal pitch and phrasing, sense of timing, and drums detract rather than add to the piece. A little tune-up with a metronome and a good vocal coach might put a lot of shine on your music.

Thanks, you SHOULD teach!

In the meantime, I'm still looking for an acoustic duo or trio or a partner to share/take over the singing live. I'm well aware of my vocal limitations.
I almost killed my marriage a while back with someone who professed interest in working with me ... so I must be circumspect, to say the least!

With Paul's advice I retracked the vocals (many times!) and then redid the drums.

You should consider finding a vocal coach Mike if you insist on singing. Maybe a few lessons would set you on your way. p.s. this is why I'm a sideman - I'm better with backups and harmonies than lead vocals.

Im with Jimmy sat night our singer had to leave and go feed his dads cows for a couple of hours so while he was gone I sang a few of the songs my band does, and Im way better backing up a singer than singing. Plus for me I find that my guitar playing suffers some, Im not able to throw as many things in there as I like too.

Im not saying dont sing thou, on my originals I ussually just go ahead and do them myself warts and all.

As I've said, I've been looking for someone to work with for xxx years now.
At this point, I can sing them myself and do the best I can recording them, or leave them to gather dust and go back to playing my songs for myself in my music room while the dog farts and the cats listen.
I sometimes get the same feeling about going out to do open mics in the same hope of finding a partner or band ... save the time and money and sit at home ... like I did for too many years ... no one gives a f*ck anyway. Almost killed my marriage because my wife is blase about my songs 95% of the time, too.

No it's definitely better to go out and do the open mics, etc hoping to meet someone, you just might. But when it comes to recording get the best vocalist you can, even if you have to hire someone.

I am having a hard time trying to figure out why people are faulting Mike's voice? it does not seem to be out of key? c'mon!

There's a lot more to being a vocalist than just hitting the right notes Dane. Conviction, strength, timbre all count. When the music is noticeably better than the vocals these kind of discussions will happen, especially when the poster says 'let me have it'. It's nothing personal.

if Bobby McFerrin could get a hit out of "Don't Worry Be Happy" and Mike's singing is better than that, then no telling what hidden gems are on Mike's CD

I think it sounds ok...
Mike I know you know you're not a "singer".
Nothing wrong with trying to improve on it and this does sound better than the previous. Just keep working at it. I know how you feel!

Dane, I have to ask..you're kidding, right? "Don't Worry...." was a pretty goofy song granted, but have you ever really listened to the way McFerrin sings it????

That guy has vocal chops and ideas that are other worldly! If had one...I'd gladly give up a testicle to sing HALF as good as BF!!!
