I'm thinking of fishing. Not much luck with music right now so I'm dreaming of bluegill, crappie, bass (largeouth, smallmouth, white), redear sunfish, walleye, saugeye, channel cat, green sunfish, whatever bites. Each year I try a few new things, new lures and techniques. I'm planning on working docks and marinas more, getting lures to go under the corners of the docks, both inside and outside corners. I'm planning on buying some very long rods (9 ft +) that I can maneuver around docks, submerged trees. I may step up to larger lb test (6 to 8 lb). I might even start eating the fish that I'm not allergic to.
I observe guys who specialize in marinas and they seldom go hungry. All the years I have fished I have intensely watched successful fishermen. When I trout fished rivers there were guys that did amazing things with nymphs, salmon eggs and worms, yet I became very successful with tiny Dardevles (spoons) and Mepps spinners. I actually had guys follow me and copy me. That was pretty cool!
I haven't used live bait for over 30 years, nothing but lures, mainly Mepps, Dardevles and jigs of various kinds. I fish slow and steady using the lightest line I can get away with and lures that contrast with the background color. Fishing is around the corner and it gets me to not think about stupid sh*t I have no control over. Fish either strike or not. They aren't the evil sons of bitches I've been dealing with lately, so it'll be a welcome break for me when I disappear to a favorite body of water....

Geez.
I haven't gone fishing since I was a kid.
I liked going out in a boat more than actually doing any fishing though.
Too gross & messy.

There used to be a small pond on the property behind us when I lived in Taylor.
A neighbor threw away some sort of plastic aquarium once, that I turned into a glass-bottom boat.
Me & my friends would paddle around the pond and check out the fish & frogs through the bottom.

It was a lot of fun until someone smashed our boat while we were away.
They threw a giant rock into it and it partially sank.
Bummer.

Hey Bob,
I fish a lot, March through Dec. sometimes. This is my suggestion. The old sayin
fish big gear - catch big fish is true. You have to be reasonable to what you
are after though. My average rig is a 7' heavy med. pole, 20lb spider wire, #5
hook with a 7" Zoom mag super fluke (Disco Violet) or a 6" Strike King KVD
Perfect Plastics caffeine shad (Pearl).

I fish for lg. mouth exclusively on my lake around docks and structure. If you
bring these lures alive with rod action you will catch them if they are there.
Be sure to have the med. heavy action rod to set the hook quickly.

My 2cents.
Good Luck![/b]

I use very light gear to get as many hits as possible from as many different species as possible. I enjoy catching everything in front of me. I've never been a huge fan of Largemouth. I think as a gamefish that they are way over-rated. They don't have anywhere near the stamina of smallmouth and pound for pound they don't compare IMO to trout, bluegil, redear, white bass, etc. I enjoy catching them, don't get me wrong, and certainly their jumping out of the water is a thrill, but a 10 pound carp will fight WAY longer than a largemouth bass. I'm amazed at the popularity of bass tournaments, it's a huge industry. Utterly amazing. Ray Scott was a true visionary, and that's all about a fish that was considered a trash fish not that many decades ago....

Been a while since I went fishing but I do enjoy it in many forms. When I was a kid we spent two weeks every summer in the Sierras and most of our protein came from rainbow trout caught, cleaned, cooked, and eaten within 1 hour. That was the best! I have also done some catfish and bass fishing at the Colorado river, and open water ocean spearfishing. Fresh caught Pacific Halibut is also hard to beat.
