There are several types of songwriters and one of those types is the actor type. i fall into that category in fact.
Some folks write about their loves, their experiences, others write about the expeiences and feelings of the character they are channeling when they write the song.
I tried for years to explain that to my ex who was sure I had all these weird feelings and I'd tell her - that's not me! It's the guy in the song!
EG "I hate the city but I need the violence" - that line was from the mouth of a character in my song - nothing to do with me.

I never really liked singers who did that.
It struck me as 'fake', somehow.
NoMeansNo wrote a song in the first person about parental abuse called 'Dad'.
It was a college radio hit at the time, back in the 80's.
The band were constantly asked in interviews, "were you abused as a child?"
Nope.
They had very nice supportive loving families.
Nothing really bad ever happened to them.
Laughing Hyenas, on the other hand, insisted on writing about what had actually happened to them or someone they knew.
I always respected that about them.
The Ramones were mostly the same way, although they sometimes exaggerated.
Joey was nearly institutionalized, but never lobotomized.
I'm a little undecided on what to do with mine.
I'll probably write some true songs.
But, I may also make up a lot of surreal nonsense gibberrish lyrics.
The Melvins lyrics never mean ANYTHING...EVER.
So, at least they never run out of subject matter.
Here is the lyrics from "Hooch", as an example:
Los ticka toe rest
Might like-a sender doe-ree
Your make a doll a ray day sender
Bright like a penalty
Exi-tease my ray day member
Half lost a beat away
Purst in like a one way sender
War give a heart like a fay
'Cuz I can Ford a red-eed
Only street a wide a re-land
Diamond make a mid-evil
Bike a sake a like a re-caste
'Cuz I can Ford a red-eed
Only street a wide a re-land
On a re-land, find a re-land
You sink a my swan
Rolly a get a worst in
Maybe minus way far central
Poor forty duck a pin
Milk maid dud bean
Master a load a head
Pill pop a dope a well run
General hash pump a gonna led
'Cuz I can Ford a red-eed
Only street a wide a re-land
Diamond make a mid-evil
Bike a sake a like a re-caste
'Cuz I can Ford a red-eed
Only street a wide a re-land
On a re-land, find a re-land
