There are several types of songwriters and one of those types is the actor type. i fall into that category in fact.

Some folks write about their loves, their experiences, others write about the expeiences and feelings of the character they are channeling when they write the song.

I tried for years to explain that to my ex who was sure I had all these weird feelings and I'd tell her - that's not me! It's the guy in the song!
EG "I hate the city but I need the violence" - that line was from the mouth of a character in my song - nothing to do with me.

I never really liked singers who did that.
It struck me as 'fake', somehow.
NoMeansNo wrote a song in the first person about parental abuse called 'Dad'.
It was a college radio hit at the time, back in the 80's.
The band were constantly asked in interviews, "were you abused as a child?"
Nope.
They had very nice supportive loving families.
Nothing really bad ever happened to them.

Laughing Hyenas, on the other hand, insisted on writing about what had actually happened to them or someone they knew.
I always respected that about them.

The Ramones were mostly the same way, although they sometimes exaggerated.
Joey was nearly institutionalized, but never lobotomized.

I'm a little undecided on what to do with mine.
I'll probably write some true songs.
But, I may also make up a lot of surreal nonsense gibberrish lyrics.

The Melvins lyrics never mean ANYTHING...EVER.
So, at least they never run out of subject matter.
Here is the lyrics from "Hooch", as an example:

Los ticka toe rest
Might like-a sender doe-ree
Your make a doll a ray day sender
Bright like a penalty

Exi-tease my ray day member
Half lost a beat away
Purst in like a one way sender
War give a heart like a fay

'Cuz I can Ford a red-eed
Only street a wide a re-land
Diamond make a mid-evil
Bike a sake a like a re-caste

'Cuz I can Ford a red-eed
Only street a wide a re-land
On a re-land, find a re-land

You sink a my swan
Rolly a get a worst in
Maybe minus way far central
Poor forty duck a pin

Milk maid dud bean
Master a load a head
Pill pop a dope a well run
General hash pump a gonna led

'Cuz I can Ford a red-eed
Only street a wide a re-land
Diamond make a mid-evil
Bike a sake a like a re-caste

'Cuz I can Ford a red-eed
Only street a wide a re-land
On a re-land, find a re-land

Yea, Stevie Ray plays on the 3 songs that were hits from that album.

Lets Dance
Little China Girl
Modern Love

I used to book a lot of Texas bands, including SRV into Beaumont TX (@ Fat Dogs, The Foxy Lady, & The Lighthouse) before he was famous. Always thought he was great, but didn't think he had a chance of making it because blues was just not popular.

David Bowie heard him at the Montreux Jazz Festival and freaked because he played like he had never heard of Jimmy Page, rare in those days.

So he used him on 3 tracks of that album and those 3 tracks were the biggest hits of Bowie's most successful album.

Bowie had an 8 city tour of America, making 11 MILLION per show for himself and you know what he offered SRV to go on tour with him?

$300 per concert. Yes, that's what I said...a measly $2,400 for the whole tour!?! What a cheapskate. No, Stevie didn't go for it.

But Stevie was able to use that album as a springboard for his own band to take off and the rest is history.

I saw SRV a couple of times, and that man tore into the guitar harder than anyone Ive ever seen. I dont know how to describe it, many say he was fluid but from where I sat he forced every freakin note out of his guitar!

I cant think of anyone that played or plays with the intensity between his hands and guitar like he did.

Ive truelly never heard anyone play one of his songs and do it justice.

Yeah man - have you ever seen the vid ?
Bowie pretends he is playing the SRV part - while wearing gloves IIRC.

It's not like we were "buds" or anything but I did hang with him a few times. His ex was after my lead guitarist too. LOL

But people were going to his grave in Oak Cliff to get souvineers, so they had to move his body and I think it's unmarked now.

Awesome .... missed my chance to see him. There was only one SRV ....
I have been to Jimi's grave .... at the time it was just a flat marker on the ground ...... someone had written " If I dont see you know more in this life I'll see you in the next one - dont be late " ....
I should look for my pics
