Genes can have lots to do with music. Some people can't take loud music or sound. Others may need it loud to hear what they need to hear. That's me. There is nothing in my genes about music. History about tolerance to loud noise is prevalent. A small inner ear has been diagnosed and I have had right ear problems since my brother capped my ears (as seen on tv) when I was six. I have to be careful not to get water in them or go legally deaf. I have used hair driers to get water out of my eardrums. I do not use Q-tips before showering. Ear wax is good at keeping water out. Sometimes my right ear hears sounds different that my left. It makes nice stereo quality. I can only use the phone with my left ear. I only have to protect hearing in my left ear. I can feel good base lines and drums in my chest. That is cool. Electronic sounds not intended to be heard- I can hear. Sour notes expose themselves. Stevie Nicks said her grandpa was an unsuccessful musician, and that her success was validation. Where do I stand with all this information? That's none of your business.

Yeah, right. Studies often lean towards the opinions of those doing the studies. I'm the only musician in my family.

Though I agree with your statement as related to "studies" mostly because they are conducted by fallible men.

It is quite possible that there were many in your family whom might have been musically inclined but simply chose another path.

I believe the idea of genetics playing a role..

My mother is a classical trained pianist/piano + music teacher.

My father plays Piano and can't read a lick of music but can play impromptu with relative ease. He's also quite insane.

One grows up listening to what's being played and it helps to train your ear.

My mother started to teach me piano and music theory, but at the onset of the 1st lesson she hit me with a ruler on the hands and that was the end of that.

She then attempted to force me to play trumpet which I wholeheartedly disliked. I was a 3rd trumpet forever or so it seemed, but I listened to what was being played and made my own decisions about what I liked verses what I didn't.

I never played with either my father or mother, as they weren't interested in what I was playing and to be fair, I wasn't interested in what they were playing either.

I credit my mother for my ear, although she didn't do much except add to the overall stress of it all and I credit my father for the ability to come up with whatever I need very quickly and with almost no effort.

They say it's a fine line between insanity and inspiration and in some cases, it's even a finer line than that.

So let me get this straight?

All us Germans are genetically superior in every way to include musicianship, sex and good looks?

Well thankyou, now everyone to the back of the bus.

My grandfather was a guitarist and gospel musician and put out a couple of albums in the early 60's. My father was guitarist in a few blues/classic rock bands in the early 70's. My older brother was a guitarist in the hair band 80's. and I'm still trying to learn.

I agree somewhat. There are several in my family lineage that play air guitar and air drums. Most of them are musically challenged. Even the air drummer taps his foot on "2"
