overdrive guitar has a thousand more colors in it than your typical jazz guitar.
if any jazz player ventures outside of that stagnant pond, they are rejected by the purists.
"purists"??? who gives a flying leap about "purists"? i have no use for purists of any stripe. and for the record i have nothing against "overdriven" gtr tones....but not when it's to the point where it's so overcompressed and overprocessed that it obscures what kind of a gtr it is.....or when it's used as a crutch to hide behind to cover slop.
i get it... "clean jazz gtr tone" ain't your thing...but say what you will, it takes balls and chops to play clean w/o hiding behind boatloads of compression and processing. on the other hand anyone w a little bit talent can sound fairly respectable running endless straight 1/16 or 1/32 notes at 180 BPM w shitloads of compression playing that style.
which is why mainstream jazz is a stagnant pond.
and stagnant ponds smell and are boring.
to each his own pond then. i hear ideas, improvising, reacting in the moment to what the other band members are playing, and execution in straight ahead jazz.
that other stuff....i only hear "execution", and playing sheet super fast cos' why?...cos' that makes it more "brutal" sounding???
improvising, reacting in the moment and ideas=art
execution, and playing super fast=craft
