George I heard you saying you were doing some upgrade or remodeling to your shed , is it possible something youve done has amplified your sound outside the bldg ? Ask around the neiborhood and see if everyone is noticing a difference. I like it loud , but sometimes its good to be able to turn it down and still sound great. That itself can take a lot of practice as a band....I'm no expert , but theres my 2 cents...

Yes, I have no doubt that not only the partially completed modifications as well as the arrangement of amps / monitors have contributed some.

Tonight we closed the doors, we turned it down, and still got complaints.
Seriously, someone is just being an ass, because we were not nearly as loud as we have been in the past.

We had a good visit with the Constable whom came out tonight. Hopefully we have come to an agreement.
It won't stop the complaining I believe, because like I said, it's just someone being an ass. And now the "law" has empowered them to be a bigger ass.

Honestly if any of you had stood outside the shop tonight you'd be saying WTF ? Someone is just being an ass.

If you guys are inside the shop, I wonder if facing the equipment away from the current direction might make a difference... Maybe throw up a barrier or something... toward the source of complaints...

The town must have noise ordinances on the books - 'so many decibels at so many feet from the structure' as well as possible time limits on it. I suggest you investigate further or you are just going to keep getting visits every practice. Know your rights!

I think your next logical step would be applying egg cartons to the inside walls for soundproofing or if you can afford it "acoustic texture boards/panels"

the acoustic texture is spread with a machine in wet paste like form with a machine you can rent at your nearest rental place and you buy the "texture" in a 5 gallon bucket among other forms.. egg cartons are much cheaper and work every bit as good..

We used some old acoustic ceilimg tile in one of our practice shops . Got it when they were doing some remodeling at a office . Works great easy to put up and it was free

What is an issue is the wife and I are having to save up some money first.

We are not in the City. We are in the county. There is no ordnance so it's purely subjective. Someone complains and the county sheriff has to arbitrate.

George, as a carpenter I have used a product called Home-A-Soat for soundproofing around elevator shafts (where an office is built up against) it is approx. $25.00 a 4'x8' sheet. It is made of paper and I have even used it instead of sheetrock it's lighter too. When I had my remodeling business I built a soundproof music room inside a guy's garage. It cuts the sound volume down at least 50%. Ceiling tiles work great too. I have used those just like No.1 did for a band rehearsal room back in the 80's.

I've got some sheets of something called Quiet Brace which are the size of sheetrock. I'm having the movers take them to my new home where I'm renting and won't have a stand alone rehearsal studio. I figure to at least lean them against the walls in the basement room I choose for that. (perhaps some frames could be built?)

My wife sadly gave me the heave ho. Can't blame her. But the music must go on and I've found for practice at home I need my amp (Mustang V / Marshall 4x12) set on 3 to get the sort of edge I need for the sound I want. Not terribly loud but I need to baffle it for the neighbor's sake.

Sadly, I don't see any more jam or prac sessions in my space. Currently we rehearse in another guy's studio so ok for now.

An interesting factoid - the big amp sounds better at low volumes than my G-dec prac amp. I'm assuming the combination of master volume and more speaker depth are the reasons.

Mike, it sounds like what you have is fiber-brace. is it black and has a oily smell?

I hope it's enough - it's a nice large house but neighbors are a bit close and I'm on a hill atop a cul de sac. Don't want to serenade everyone!

I'm open to any suggestions on soundproofing.

I constructed a two foot square box frame and lined it with carpet.
I intend to put my MARSHALL CASS 5 amp inside it as a muffler.
Our bassist feel it may cause some feed back issues into the mic.
I'll try it out tomorrow.
Tonight I'm going to relax with my ol lady and have a few drinks.

I'm sorry to hear about your split.
Jeanette and I were separated for about a year.
Seems she did not like my girlfriend much.
I kid about it only a little, was the lowest point of my whole life.
