Aint Yo Mama has a gig sat night.

Our bassist has a recording studio and recently got a setup for live recording, so we are going to try and record our show.

Not sure how it works but he will take our sound board out and use his laptop as a mixer and record the tracks live. Dont know what we will do with it, cause its just cover crap anyway, but should be a cool way to keep the moment.

Ooops guess I should have practiced more this week. I will have to show some restraint in my solos, cause live a lot of time I way overplay which is cool on video seeing how fast I can play, but in reality it sounds better when I lay back and let the solos breath, instead of going 90 mph.

Im trying a little different setup with my amps. Im using my Mesa Triple Rec into a 4x12 cab, and then slaving out of it into the power section of my Subway Rocket and running another 4x12. The two amps have different power tubes and when I hooked them up at the house it just sounds fuller to my ears. Ive redialed the Triple Rec, and I think Im just going to leave my Tube Screamer on the whole time and use my volume knob on the guitar to increase the breakup I need, between rythym and lead, the TS seems to take a little of the spikiness that I get out of my amp sometimes. Plus when you dime the volume on the guitar it just gets that creamy fluid lead sound I love.

Go Johnny go go!

Yeah you have to keep those chops up, ideally by playing at least an hour every day but life gets in the way sometimes.

Hope the recording goes well. Rock on!

wow...that sound like a killer rig setup but i gotta ask...how BIG is this place you're playing? or is an outside gig?

most of the gtr gigs i play these days i'm using my 65 DELUXE reissue. the older i get the less equip i like to haul!

if you get any good recordings be sure to put 'em up to share.

Hey John,

I assume if he's going to record out of the board that you guys are going to have to mic the entire drum set? If he's coming out track for track, that would be pretty awesome, but I'm wondering if he's just going to record a stereo mix, and thinking that if the mix is remotely off, then the recording is useless.

I have virtually no production/recording experience in live scenarios, so these are more thoughts and concerns I've wondered about for a while.

JW does a bunch of 80s covers and so 4x12 guitar cabs are required kit. 90% of the shows I do with a little 1x12 Mesa. I sort of look like the kid on the right in that talent show. Hopefully I bring a little more chops though.

oh, i totally get it. right tools for the job. just seems like a lot of horsepower (and schlepping...that i don't envy). of course if it's a really big venue or a big deal outside gig that's another story.

most of my gtr gigs are playing straight ahead jazz, blues, and R&B in smaller places or just straight up solo gtr gigs. besides the db's consideration...it would look pretty goofy if i showed up w several amps and several 4x12's !
just as it would look silly if JW showed up for one of his gigs w a DELUXE!

and....i'm quite confidant that you do a better job than the kid (both of 'em) in that video!

Planet Ive done gigs with just a preamp in the mixer, and my little subway with a 10 inch speaker is plenty, I dont play as loud as you think from what I use, I just like it, I like the way it looks, and I love the way it sounds.

We used to db our gigs and no matter what room we play its ussually around 100-104db, if your into that sort of thing.

No this isnt a large room, we ussually have around 120 people in there.

Kramer, we use 4 mics on the drums, basically he has Pro Tools in his laptop, he will use the laptop as the mixer and feed pro tools off of the mixer so he will have the individual tracks, 4 mics drums, guitar, bass, 4 vocal mics, and since Im using two amps, I might put an extra mic on my other amp, so he can get a fuller thicker sound. Im not to up on this type of recording, he does all of that.

I hope to get some video and he thinks he can sync the tracks to the video, whenever I just use a video camera the sound doesnt sound anything like we do live, to my ears anyway, but hell they are shot from all the horsepower gigs we did do thru the years.

Ive shared this before, but out band basically is a 70s arena rock tribute band, I want the look and feel of old concerts I went too, so thats why I use what I do, I think our pa is around 6000 watts, way too much, but we actually only run it around 60%, so the sound is clean, no feedback, our singer can literally stick the mic in the mains and you dont hear any feedback, so its great, plus lights and smoke and lazers, just gives our gigs that old school vibe.

Are you doing any panning thru the board, Or do you run your p.a. mono?

Haley we run mono, actually the way our amps are I could set it up stereo, but not gonna bother, when I used to do that it just kinda got lost anyway.

Capt if you got your sh*t equed right and know what your doing its no big deal to stick a mic in the speakers, we get zero feedback.

Now watch us have feedback problems all night since i said that, LOL!

Gonna be fun, Ive got a bunch of the guys that I used to race motorcycles with coming, with thier wifes, so it should be cool.

They threw the old song Ride On by AC/DC at me, I couldnt remember how it went, but we may give it a shot if everyone will listen to it a couple of times. Thats just how we roll! Listen, learn, play it, the way it should be!

JW break a leg, you'll be fine like you solid guys always are.
You don't go as far as you guys do and have anything too weird go on, all the bugs are all worked out already.

Knock them dead, just not literally.. lol
