I sure wished I knew how to work the quote
button, but I don't smoke cigarettes. I've heard
of Nickleback, just another one of them bands
my kids use to listen to, and I'd holler turn that
sh#t down, I'm trying to watch the news.

*cough*
Nugent, Seger, Kid Rock, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, MC5, Insane Clown Posse, Parliment, White Stripes, Grand Funk Railroad, Al Green, The Romantics, Taproot, Anita Baker, Funkadelic, Marshal Crenshaw, Mitch Rider and Detroit Wheels, Wilson Picket

And I'm not even getting into the tons of legends from the Motown scene as you've already pointed out.

Come on dude, you gotta admit there were plenty of big acts that came out of Detroit.

Not Denying it... But for qualification : A big act is not the same as Brilliant musicians.

I will Agree that the following were brilliant ACTS...responsible for beginning a branch of fashion trends... which have since died...

Alice Cooper (I will even contend he was the grand dad of American punk....)
Iggy Pop:
Grand Funk Railroad (Great Party Music, solid, clean rock)
The Romantics

The rest of them (to name a few) are brilliant Musicians, who have their roots and evolved FROM Motown, which I have always contended was the premier signature of Detroit, hence Detroit has Motown...Thats IT !

Parliment White Stripes,
Al Green,
Anita Baker
Funkadelic,
Wilson Picket

Parlament and Funkadelic was from Detroit,
Get the Funk Outta my Face, Funk Getting
Ready to Roll, does that mean Bootsie Collins
was from Detroit, maybe the best bass player
ever.

A city can't have an attitude. Only individuals can. And to imply that "all of *fill in the blank* people are *fill in the blank* is prejudice.

Prejudiced? Really? Then how come the real experts out there reference any collection of people as a 'group' and then assign adverbs an adjectives to their behaviors such as "Group think", or 'Gang mentality". When you have a collective body of sports fans, all hating the same thing for the same reason, and they represent themselves as "Detroit" , we now have a collection set, called a group, representing itself as a city, which in fact carries an attitude. ( For the sake of communication....) BTW, when I reference my car, I refer to "her" as "She eats the 40mph curve at 65+ mph" We both know that cars aren't gender specific, and they sure as hell cant 'eat curves'

Detroit has a ton of music not just the awesome motown. I mean even madonna who you cited has had a HUGE career. Even if "ray of light" was her last big thing that's still a LONG run. And since when does commercial success dictate valid or even good?

I do not disagree that Detroit has tons of music..other than Motown...
There is correlation with "valid, good" and Commercial success. Specifically, if one is that good, there is usually a compelling case and consensus to share the music with the world, by the world.

All commercial music is 'pushed' through... but not all commercial music offers compelling justification... In that case, you have promoters who artificially hype up the lemons...

Motown had its share of that..but they also really did have compelling music (brilliant I might add)
Grand Funk (Even by Mark Farner's own admission) was always hyped up ... Its the only way they could survive in the industry... They had to get pushed by the dealer... In his case, he really was an excellent, down-right awesome guitarist with real heart for what he did. "Were an American band" rocked (and you'll notice he didn't say they were a "Detroit" band" )

It all comes back to this... Detroit sports fans should not be so arrogant...While Detroit contributes a lot to the music scene... it aint good enough (in my book) to warrant being assholes to others about it.

I cant say it any other way...

That seems like a rather pointless waste of negative energy and negative attitude to me.

I don't think "suck" belongs in music anywhere.

Really?! Oh joy! So tiny Tim, new kids on the block, the spice girls, Tiffany, linkin park, and slipknot are cool by you?! Super!

Without bad there is no good.

Christopher, I agree with you... Its pointless to cast negative energy and arrogance like that... I also believe that the negative sh*t we put out there comes back on us... ten fold...

Paul is absolutely correct...without bad there is no good, without suck there is no greatness. So in that regard they have their place in the universe and I hereby retract my opinion of them. They don't suck, they're just doing the job the universe dealt them.

Calling bad music bad music is not "casting negative energy". It's telling it like it is. If I brought you a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, mayo, onion and GRAPE JELLY would you be "casting negative energy" and asking for a karma back slap if you said "you know, jelly ruins a burger. It SUCKS!"? I don't think so. You'd be telling the truth. And hopefully preventing further suckage. Critiquing music is NOT "casting negative energy".

There's no such thing as bad music,Neanderpaul,
you did that Slim Whitman tune a couple of weeks
ago, now when I was a kid I thought Slim sucked,
now I enjoy his music. Maybe your opinion of suck will
change with time.
Your right Paperdog the more you say other people
suck, the more other people say you suck. It is karma.

Just one thing to understand, if your gonna dance
you gotta pay the band, Just a little old fashioned
karma coming down.
