Not to call myself a beginner or anything, but I'm not looking to go professional for any reason. I've been browsing around just looking for somebody to jam with first, don't really know anyone in town doing the same, so I figured I'd look online. I like the feel of Bandmix, but it's also geared towards folks aiming to be professionals, and I don't want to fork out money just to talk to people. I'm a hobbyist by nature, never had big ambitions to go on stage, maybe an open mic or two, but I really just want to find some like-minded folks that want to get together and jam. If we feel like we should go pro and perform an actual gig that would be decided later.

So I guess my question is this: Where would I start to find some people in the area that just want to jam?

My initial thought was to head out to some of the open mics, but I'm a piano player/keyboardist. I'd feel silly dragging my whole kit into a local mic that's geared for guitarists.

Under description on your Band Mix Page try something like:
JUST LOOKING TO JAM AND HAVE SOME FUN!
No pressures.

Use the BM search function, just plug in your zip and decide how far you're willing to travel and see what you can find.

Some opens mics have keys, you can always call ahead to find out before you lug your gear out of the basement.

On a side note your recording is a bit out of tune on the guitars. just sayin...
Good Luck

that's actually how we started out. we were just a bunch of friends playing songs in a garage. I don't know how old you are, but we all found each other at high school. One guy started asking random people if they knew how to play. as far as the open mics go, I'd say listen to other people play if you don't feel like bringing your stuff in. Listen to others sing/play and ask them if they want to jam. I'm kinda' side tracking here, but I always thought it would be cool if there was a full band that would play and replace one of the band members for a night with somebody who wants to be in a band so that people could here what they sounded like.

I think open mics are the best way to meet musicians/ If this is what you want to do, you're going to hafta pack up your axe and go. Some open mics may have a piano or keyboard set up anyway. Never avoid a situation by thinking there is no venue or need for your contribution...that is the beginning of failure.

I agree with the other posters.. Many open jams are "other instrument" friendly, and even if they aren't, it can work in your favor to go and just network with other musicians.. Just like the NY Lotto says, " You have to be IN it to WIN it!" Seems to come in cycles here.. a whole mess of jams will open, and there isn't enough time in the week to get to them all, then they kinda dry up for a while. We had one open mic that had a run of just a couple of months, but we had keyboard players show up, flute players, one dude came with a ukelele.. You just never know. Some are structured to be just for acoustic guitar, some allow electric, and some have a full backline.. Which can be irritating if all you want to do is play 3 nice acoustic songs, and people decide they need to jump up to play along.. Just go out and do it.. Not sure what the scene is like where you live, here in Vegas, you usually cant swing a cat without hitting an open mic  Good luck.
Just looked at the date of this post, but i'll keep the comment up anyway :)

That's a solid statement Black57:

"Never avoid a situation by thinking there
is no venue or need for your contribution"
