Fisherman, I know your tendecy towards sarcasm but I also know that you are capable of giving an intelligent anwer. LOOK, I DON'T CARE IF WE DON'T GET PAID IN THE BEGINNING, C'OS WHEN NO ONE KNOWS WHO YOU ARE YOU HAVE TO PLAY TO WHOEVER HAPPENS TO DROP IN. THE OTHER MAJOR CHANGE WE ARE MAKING IS AUDITIONING AGAIN FOR AN OPEN MIC AT A CERTAIN CLUB, PLAYING 5 COVERS BY METALLICA, MEGADETH, THE EAGLES, THIN LIZZY AND AEROSMITH. I KNOW THAT NO MATTER HOW GOOD OUR BAND THINKS OUR OWN MATERIAL IS, IT IS NOTHING BUT A "IN ONE EAR AND OUT THE OTHER" SITUATION. BUT WHEN I PLAYED AS A ONE MAN BAND, DOING 4 ORIGINALS AND ONE ALICE IN CHAINS SONG USING MY OWN BACKING TRACKS WHICH SOUNDED VERY CLOSE TO THE BAND'S ORIGINAL BASS AND DRUM PARTS, I NOTICED PEOPLE STOPPED DRINKING AND TALKING AND STARTED WATCHING AND LISETNING - EVEN ONE OF THE CLUBS EMPLOYEES TOLD ME IT WAS THE BEST THING I COULD HAVE DONE BECAUSE HE TOO NOTICED A CHANGE IN THE DYNAMIC OF THOSE SITTING AT THE BAR. PEOPLE LOVE TO HEAR SONGS THEY ALREADY LOVE TO DEATH AND SO WE ARE GONNA BE SNEAKY AND PLAY MAINLY COVERS BUT THROUGH ONE, MAYBE TWO OF OUR OWN SONGS IN THE SET WITHOUT ANNOUNCING THEM, AND SEE IF AFTER OUR SHOW SOMEONE IN THE CLUB SAYS "WHAT WAS THAT SONG YOU PLAYED, IT WAS LIKE "KNOW WHAT I WANT AND I KNOW HOW TO GET IT?". OH, THAT WAS ONE OF OURS - "REALL? THAT SONG BLEW ME AWAY. YOU SHOULD PLAY A FEW MORE OF YOUR OWN SONGS". AND SO THE STORY GOES FISHERMAN BOB, YOU EARN YOUR ROCK N' ROLL WINGS AND IF YOU'RE LUCKY, VERY LUCKY, YOU MIGHT EVEN FIND YOU CAN USE THEM TO FLY. HOPE I GAVE YOU SOMETHING OTHER THAN A NO PAY DESPITE THE PACKED HOUSE DEAL. 8)

Well Tox, I've had to do it and I'm the one you'll find at a party most likely to be off by themselves. However, I can get into character and really put on a show, so I make flyers, go out and meet people, call, call, call, get other people to call, call and call. Then when we hit the stage, just be badass to the point where we get attention.

Unfortunately, it means we have to come out of comfort zone if we have to do this. We have to put on all these different hats that people didn't have to worry about a long time ago.

The path to being a successful musician or a known one has always been fraught with perils. I mean, you could have a record label come and sign you up just to take you out of the game because you were getting too good and they already had an artist like you they'd invested in. Or, you could just have been too different for them to know what to do with and pre-Internet, when indie bands didn't have much resources, you were often kicked down into playing in a cover band until you got too old or too jaded.

So us that hang in the game just have to learn how to keep your head above water. We can get pissed off as much as we want, but honestly, it's a messed up business to be in until you make a name for yourself and even then there are problems. There's always a higher level someone wants to get to.

Invest in yourself heavily enough and it will pay dividends.

That's how I feel about the situation.

We can't be just musicians anymore.
We must be entrepreneurs.

If the clubs wont hire you open your own and put them out of business.

No ... most of us don't have that kind of financial backing individually.
But there is and always has been strength in numbers.

When musicians stop thinking in the term of me and begin to think us.
Things will change.
It is inevitable.

I have always been under the impression that its the 'chemistry' between band and audience that makes a huge difference. If we look at the amazingly successful musicians of past, They seemed aligned to the real needs of the public. There is a reason they are often called the "voices of the generation". The really good musicians were first and foremost "entertainers" with a pension to bringing seriously positive energy to the room... Their goal is to rock your world..and have you walking away so stoked that you forget you have another life...Those guys ALWAYS succeed in the end. Its like they know you and know what you need.
Chaeya, I think you got it right about the vigilance for PR. It takes LOTS of socializing... I had the privilege of BB king joining my table at his show (Antone's, Austin) back in the 1980s. What can I say... He is a Blues Master of Blues Masters, and he was humble as ever with his audience... More importantly he engaged us on so many levels. I'm guessing the club owners were in hog heaven to have such class acts in their venue.

TOXIC IS BACK, WITH GOOD NEWS CHAEYA, MY BASS PLAYER IS "GETTIN 'ER DONE" - CHECK THE PASTED EMAIL BELOW - SORRY I HAD TO CUT OUT THE PHONE #, I CAN'T GIVE THAT KIND OF INFO OUT.

I signed up for RPK and Digital press kit for Medusa on Reverb Nation and gives you direct link to people that hire band for gigs in clubs and other venues. First month is for free but later on they charge you 30 bux.
But if this sh*t can get us paid gigs it is wort of money. I sent few of them last night and so far we have two responds. I will paste below her answer and please call her ASAP and work out details. We can go again and play open mic at Joe's Anus (Grotto) but I think we will end up asking our self WTF is going on again with those ass holes ...and why we are not hired again. Lets try this "professional approach " for a while and see what can be done this way. This thing allows you to send your digital press kit to all clubs and current venues in PHX area. They can see our videos, hear our demos, look at our photos and monitor our progress on PHX rock chart. So far we have 114 fans and we had 178 visits to our page, song were played 90 times and video 20 and we are number 236 out of 500 on the local PHX chart. We also can build fan mailing list and sell tickets via this sh*t..
Also sorry I could not get to phone today when you called ...I went to water park with my fam. and phone was in locker all day.
Let me know when you will be able to practice again. I got those songs ready and we can get them done in no time. We have to take whatever they throw at us ...even if we play for free...but paid gigs are nicer to do..LOL

FIRST ONE :Call her...her name is Donna Jeans

Hello there...I did check out your sound and think you'd fit nicely in my club venues...my cell
. Give me a call so we can work out details...thank you, DJ

SECOND ONE: name is Kenda..

ANYONE HEARD OF THE MELVINS "MOOCH". I CAME ACROSS ON IT ON A VHS TAPE I RECORDED OFF CLASSIC VH1. IT BLEW ME AWAY, ITS JUST A RANCID, HEAVY ROB ZOMBISH KINDA EARLY 80S THING BUT IT STILL HOLDS UP TODAY. I'VE ALRADY PROGRAMMED MY BOSS DR 670 TO FOUR PATCHES, ALL IN A SIMILAR VEIN..........ITS CALLED HALL OF PAIN ABOUT MY 3RD VISIT TO A SO-CALLED DETOX CENTER THAT MADE ME WAIT 8 HOURS AND DO PAPERWORK AT 2:00AM IN THE MORNING. IT WAS A NIGHTMARE, I ACTUALLY LEFT THE HELL HOLE TO DETOX AT HOME. THEY WANTED INFORMATION THAT WOULD HAVE SEEN MY OTHER DOCTORS DROPPING ME. ITS MY FAULT FOR PARTYING TOO HARD, BUT HEY, ISN'T HEAVY REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE THE STUFF OF GREAT SONGS?

jw123 wrote:Paper for the record we dont play that game anymore, we dont have to, we get our business from old friends that hire us for private stuff at a set price.

But if you have a new band you have to prove yourself over and over again, just watch some of the groups that play at South By Southwest every year in Austin, some of them come from some major groups but they go there to play for free so people will see what they have.

Music is business, if a club can get talent cheaper then they have the right to do that. I dont get everyones beef, everyone seems to think just because they can play a few songs then they are entitled to being paid top money. It is what it is

I Do see your point...and 'Play for free' is a step toward solid work-ethic/character in a lot of cases.. But consider this... The house provides restrooms and accessories to patrons because to not have that would kill business and patrons would not spend their money there , hence the house would lose profits... So, should a plumber 'not' get paid to fix a toilet there, if it breaks?

I could understand if a band was driving customers away or not bringing in some kind of draw/profit for the club. What remains, are the clubs that do this all the time, they try to get all they can for free, regardless of considering the work a band puts into the effort to keep the house jumping. My personal rule...If you make money off of my time and presence, then I deserve a cut of that money (aka usual and customary fees) . .You see my point?

Just went and did my 4th day of 15 laps in the pool and just cleared my head of all this negative stuff. I'm still gonna write the way I please, like now, I feel like not using all caps; because I feel like it, not because someone else in this forum told me to. Are you some kind of Bandmix Forum Administrator? Got the power to have me removed? Feel free, its no big loss to me, you can be sure of that. 8)

Hey cool lady. Just in case gtZip has me "removed" c'os he ransacked me for my use of caps and "run on sentences", and I came back to steamroll over the guy like I tend to do - I always appreciate your feedback girl. I know I'm a loose cannon at times, it gets me into trouble a lot, but I'm working on it. 8)
