However, I can get into character and really put on a show, so I make flyers, go out and meet people, call, call, call, get other people to call, call and call. Then when we hit the stage, just be badass to the point where we get attention.
Unfortunately, it means we have to come out of comfort zone if we have to do this. We have to put on all these different hats that people didn't have to worry about a long time ago.
The path to being a successful musician or a known one has always been fraught with perils. I mean, you could have a record label come and sign you up just to take you out of the game because you were getting too good and they already had an artist like you they'd invested in. Or, you could just have been too different for them to know what to do with and pre-Internet, when indie bands didn't have much resources, you were often kicked down into playing in a cover band until you got too old or too jaded.
So us that hang in the game just have to learn how to keep your head above water. We can get pissed off as much as we want, but honestly, it's a messed up business to be in until you make a name for yourself and even then there are problems. There's always a higher level someone wants to get to.

But if you have a new band you have to prove yourself over and over again, just watch some of the groups that play at South By Southwest every year in Austin, some of them come from some major groups but they go there to play for free so people will see what they have.
Music is business, if a club can get talent cheaper then they have the right to do that. I dont get everyones beef, everyone seems to think just because they can play a few songs then they are entitled to being paid top money. It is what it is
