They know they're in demand and unless mom and pop learned them their manners right (still no gauruntee) they will come around full of themselves acting like the alley cat's meow. OR, they will be surprisingly cerebreal, professional, reliable. Then they hit the stage and turn it on, BIG TIME. What I can't stand is these cretins who show up with a few songs learned and they seem to think the band will have A SHINEY HIGH-END MACKIE 8 CH MIXER AND BIG POWER AMP, 58'S HOOKED TO MIC STANDS, EVEN A FEW DECENT SPEAKERS. Uh, no phucking way jose.

Toxic,

FIrst Thanks for the good advice...

I heard "I want it all" and "No redemption..." IMO you carried the songs well with your vocal... Are you Flange effecting on the voice . IMO You don't really need a vocalist... Your vocal has proper resonance and holds up very well (same league as an Audio slave voice if you know what I mean) .
If you haven't been used to singing front, its really just a matter of conditioning, which comes by naturally if you just keep singing... (Its the same way I learned how to play guitar Standing, after sitting so many years LOL!)

I THINK WHAT ONE HELL OF A BAND WOULD MAKE IF MY BUD JIMMY DANGER, FISHERMAN BOB, CHAEYA, MYSELF TOXICMETAL, AND A FEW OTHER FINE FOLKS ON THIS HERE FORUM INCLUDING ANGRY BASS PLAYER FROM A CITY KNOWN FOR ITS GREAT HOT SALSA MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE - WHAT A SOULFUL SOUND, WE'D ROCK, WE'D ROLL OUT THE BARREL, HAVE US A BARREL OF FUN. i STILL THINK FISHERMAN BOB HAS CURSED EVERY MUSICIAN WHO DARES COME ON THIS FORUM. HE'S A DANGEROUS MAN. HE'S A FISHERMAN. HE'S FISHERMAN BOB. HE KNOWS I'M JUST HAVING A GOOD LAUGH. FB actually is a good source of music biz info. As he mentioned, know what you want and figure out the key to getting them to come to you. I shut up now. Thank you, and now I'm in the mood for a Salsa something. LOL
fisherman bob wrote:Sometimes I play devil's advocate. For one thing you shouldn't come on a public forum and trash the city you're in. Just my opinion. There ARE professional musicians on here (like me) and ALSO venue owners and promoters from your "El Crapville" who won't look kindly on your trashing the town. Second, you're offering people money to do what? Go to a studio and do YOUR tunes. And to what goal? Are you going to use the recordings to GET GIGS? Are you going to SELL a CD eventually? What if the the "loser retarded asshole" who sees your ad happens to be a very professional musician, songwriter, singer, etc. and can contribute to your project. Would you be willing to do any of his (or her) tunes? Frankly I'm not too interested in somebody with an attitude telling me I'll "pay you $X for X time in the studio OR (worse) I'll pay you IF the resulting CD makes a profit. I would be much more interested in somebody who is willing to do some of MY tunes as well, who would be interested in my artisitic input into the project, who would be willing to listen to my ideas to (just perhaps) improve upon some of your tunes. Sounds to me like basically you're a dictator. Approach this like you're REALLY interested in COLLABORATING. Then maybe, just maybe, you might uncover somebody who isn't a "loser retarded asshole" in "El Crapville." (Just my devil's advocate opinion, don't take me too seriously...)

Well thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to listen to my band's stuff. We've only played live twice and I'm expecting myself to be MR. WONDERFUL. I keep at it, just in case we never really do find the right guy. Most of the vocal effect is due to the room wall treatments I applied, so its a kind of natural oscillation and proper mic placement. It took some time to figure all that tech / engineering stuff out. Again, thanks.

Actually there are several bands on here that would kick ass...but due to geography it's not practical. You just have to deal with what you're given. Generally, if you really want to rock you need to live in a bigger city. Audition everyone but go with the people that have a good attitude and would make a good "family". Talent and ability are only a fraction of what it takes for success.

You know its funny to me when someone says this about where they live. I mean my GF lives in a little bitty town and thru Karaoke and just going to see live music I met a bunch of musicians, and have gone and jammed with them live a bunch and have had a great time. Would I form a band with them, no, but I have another outlet to play in.

I live in a small area, about 30 minutes outside of Memphis over the years Ive found people to play with in the weirdest places.

I think instead of coming on sites like this, you need to find live music in your area and get to know those people, they are the ones doing something, sitting on your couch and just waiting on someone ot discover you isnt going to happen, number one you arent that great a musician in the first place, number two you have to get out there with people doing it. I dont think talent is the key, its someone that no matter where they are finds people doing this. The internet in some ways to me makes some very lazy musicians, back in the 80s we did the plastering car routines, we went out and heard everyone play in our area, got to know them and networked with them. These days what do we do, put an ad on here, or craigslist and expect some one to take notice.

My advice get off your ass and find anyone playing live music in your area, and believe me no matter how shitty a place you live in there are people somewhere playing.

Good Luck

I WOULD BE GRATEFUL IF SOMEONE MIGHT BE KIND ENOUGH TO GIVE ME THEIR OPINION ON THIS MATTER. SOMETIMES A FEW MORE SETS OF EXPERIENCED EARS CAN HELP SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT. I MIGHT BE OUT OF LINE OR RIGHT ON THE MONEY. HEY, I'M STILL GROWING MAN, STILL LEARNING A BUSINESS THAT I BELIEVE WAS FAR MORE OF AN EVEN PLAYING FIELD 20 YEARS AGO - WHEN YOU HAD TO PLAY A BUNCH OF GIGS, MAKE NO MONEY SINCE IT ALL WENT INTO PAYING FOR BLOCKED STUDIO TIME (THIS IS WAY BEFORE MAC / DAW HOME RECORDING). IF YOU GOT THE RIGHT PRODUCER FOR YOUR GENRE AND HE WASN'T TOO STONED OR TOO DRUNK THEN YA MADE A DECENT SOUNDING FOUR - FIVE SONG DEMO AND SHOPPED IT AS "SOLICITED MATERIAL" TO SMALLER SUBSIDIARY RECORD COMPANIES HUNGRY FOR NEW YOUNG TALENT. IF YOU WERE EXTREMELY LUCKY LIKE NIRVANA WHO SUFFERED FOR A TIME DURING "BLEACH" BUT WERE GIVEN THE GREATEST LABEL DEAL EVER WITH A & M RECORDS, HAD NEVERMIND PRODUCED BY A VERY COOL AND VERY GOOD PRODUCER IN BUTCH VIG. I WAS THRILLED TO HEAR THAT COBAIN ACTUALLY ADMITTED TO ACQUIRING A TASTE FOR VIGS' STYLE OF PRODUCTION WHICH WAS NOT AS BIG AND HUGELY OVER-PRODUCED AS INITIALLY THOUGHT. BUTCH BASCIALLY SET THE BAND UP IN A 16-TRACK SEMI DIGITAL MAKESHIFT STUDIO AND DUE TO HIS ABILITY TO PLACATE THE MOST TEMPRAMENTAL OF MUSICIANS, RECORDED A FAIRLY "LIVE" PLATINUM SELLER THAT NEITHER BUTCH NOR THE BOYS FROM NIRVANA HAD ONE IOTA THAT ALBUM WOULD JOIN THE RANKS OF THE TOP FIVE BIGGEST SELLERS OF ALL TIME - SECOND ONLY TO THE EAGLES G-HITS 1977-1979, FRAMPTOM COMES ALIVE AND STEELY DAN'S TRIPLE PLATINUM SELLING CLASSICS I.E. ASIA / GAUCHO / KATIE LIED ETC. AND THE BEATLES SGT PEPPER. I THINK I GOT 'EM ALL RIGHT. I HOPE JW123 WAS NOT REFERRING TO ME WHEN DISSED SOMEONE AS NOT BEING THAT GREAT A MUSICIAN. NO ONE DESERVES TO HAVE THAT THROWN AT THEM UNLESS THEY ARE REALLY PISS AND VINEGAR BRAGGIN' WITHOUT BRAGGING RIGHTS. I HAVE PRODUCED MY OWN MATERIAL IN MY HOME STUDIO (BLACKLIGHT STUDIO IN PHOENIX, AZ) WHERE I WROTE ALL THE SONGS, PLAYED ALL INSTRUMENTS, AND PRODUCED THE WHOLE KIT AND KABOODLE ONTO CD VIA M KORG'S HARD DRIVE TWO-TRACK STEREO MIX. AND IT SOUNDS AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN THESE OVER PRICED FREE STANDING STUDIOS WHO LOCK YOU INTO SAY, 5 HOURS OF BLOCKED TIME ON A SATURDAY THEN PROMPTLY DICTATE THE FACT THAT YOU AIN'T USING YOUR MARSHALL JCM800, OH NO, THE PRODUCER HAS GOT YOU $500 IN THE HOLE AND WANTS YOU TO RECORD YOUR GUITAR THROUGH HIS FENDER TWIN REVERB AND WON'T EVEN ALLOW YOU TO RUN THE MASTER REVERB / ECHO WHICH ON THE INPUT SIDE DOES NOT END UP PERMANENTLY RECORDED UNTIL HE MIXES IT DOWN TO OUTPUT EFFECT BUS AND EQ (YOUNG MUSICIANS / BANDS, BEWARE OF THESE KIND OF SLY STUDIO SHARKS). IT IS POSSIBLE TO RECORD EVEN A LEAD VOCAL DUMMY TRACK TO GET THE BASIC RHYTHM SECTION IN LINE AND ON THEIR RESPECTIVE TRACKS WITH COMPRESSION, ANYTHING, USING THE MASTER EFFECTS. ITS ONLY FOR INSPIRATION AS I HATE RECORDING VOCALS DRY AS A FISHBONE KNOWING I COULD HAVE ADDED NON-COMITTED REVERB,COMPRESSION OR ECHO OR ALL THREE. I KNOW THIS BECUASE ALL THREE SONGS YOU CAN HEAR ON MY BANDMIX SITE WERE RECORDED "FAKE DRY" INPUT THEN COMMITTED EFFECTS AND EQ TO THE OUTPUT TWO TRACK MIXDOWN. SO NEVER LET ANY STUDIO ENGINEER TELL YOU IT CAN'T BE DONE. JUST AS ANY COOL EFFECTS CAN BE RUN THROUGH THE MONITORS IN A LIVE VENUE WITHOUT FEEDBACK. I'VE DONE IT. MOST CLUB DESK JOCKEYS ARE FULL OF sh*t WHEN THEY FREEK AT THE IDEA OF SENDING A BUS OR B BUS EFFECTS TO THE STAGE MONITORS "IT'LL FEEDBACK LIKE CRAZY MAN! I'LL PUT IT IN THE MAINS!" YOU WON'T KNOW FOR SURE IF HE IS GOING TO THROW ECHO OR A GATE ON THE MAINS WHEN MOST OF THESE GUYS ARE WALKING AROUND THE BAR TALKING BS TO SOME HOT BABE INSTEAD OF MANNING THE BOARD. ITS A FACT, SO KEEP; AN EYE ON THESE TYPES TOO. TAKE 'EM OUTSIDE AFTER THE GIG IF YOUR FANS SAY HE LEFT YOUR SOUND TO ROT IN THE MAINS. THEY ARE LAZY LITTLE BASTARDS, SOUND ENGINEERS (NOT ALL OF THEM, BUT A TYPICAL OPEN MIC NIGHT WHEN YOU SHOULD SOUND YOUR VERY BEST) IS THE MOST LIKELY TIME TO CATCH THESE BUMS WANDERING AROUND THE BAR - AND THEY AIN'T DOING IT TO "LISTEN" TO THE SOUND AS IT VARIES DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU THE PATRON MAY BE SITTING AT THE TIME. I'VE DONE MY HOMEWORK. DO YOURS, PLEASE.

I know how easy it is to slam the 80s, and why. People, ya got to remember that the 80's was the heyday of the Alesis 16 track using ADAT which I still think was the greatest biggest and warmest sounding production media EVER. I HATE ALL THIS PRO TOOLS / DAW CRAP. My songs were recorded on a 40gb (nothing compared to the GB's they have now) Korg Digital Home Studio. I did not CUT AND PASTE a great chorus c'os that's for those who may not have much of a budget and need to get it done ASAP - HOWEVER, I had all the time in the world working ALONE and I performed what they refer to in the recording chain as rollovers - these are the digital replacement of actually physically cutting the quarter inch tape to splice in a mistake made by a badly rehearsed band member. I put in a 5 second "intro" into the goof, which means you are telling your hard drive to auto record 5 seconds over the goof, then I set the rollout to 5 seconds to keep things nice and tidy. I COULD HAVE CUT AND PASTED BUT IT SOUNDS SO STERILE. If you can't hack re-recording a bad take by doing a rollover, well buster, yer in the wrong business. The 80's did produce a lot of one hit wonders, but it set the stage for the 90s Grunge Movement. It also produced The Clash, The Eagles Hell Freezes Over, Missing Persons first album, SAGA - remember SAGA? "ON THE LOOSE TONIGHT" AND THEIR BRILLIANT SECOND ALBUM featuring I'M THE FLYER. 80s made the first great techo stuff, like ULTRAVOX'S CLASSIC "VIENNA" ALBUM. I wasn't big on DEVO or THE B52s but they were, well, original. And while all the silly New Wave bands were busy making their hair VERY BIG, Dave Mustaine got kicked out of Metallica and formed Megadeth. The 80s was actually a VERY OPEN FORUM. I recall the FM station I was listening to at the time was playing the most liberal set list now gone forever, because DJ's on the radio had their power to play what they thought was great FM Rock stripped from them by Wall Streets CORPORATE AMERICA AROUND 1986. The scum who swooped in like the cretins from SONY, mainly the Japanese Big Corporate, they came in and handed a set format to radio DJs basically saying "This Demographics. We number crunch. This set list works. You now play the same songs everyday at the same time of day - forever. SCREW THEM. IN MY MIND I AM ROCK N' ROLL TRUMP, TAKING BACK THE RADIO STATIONS AND GIVING DJS THE POWER THEY ONCE HAD. SONY AND THE REST OF YOU BOTTOM DWELLERS, GET OUTTA TOWN BEFORE SUNDOWN OR ELSE...................

NEWSFLASH: While trying out one of the latest super hi-gain 8 6L6's and 8 EL34 E=MC2, FOUR CHANNEL MONSTER HEADS through a 1960 A Marshall Cab with Eminence speakers, aliens from Patonga, a planet in the binary star system of Alpha Centuri heard some very very good blues guitar tones and riffs (I think the Fisherman is a blues guy) and could not resist taking the poor guy AND HIS 1956 CURLY TOP SUNBURST LES PAUL AND RIG to Patonga for an impromptu jam. It was beyond comprehension. FB stated "they dispelled the myth that aliens are only into inserting tube like instruments up yer butt. No way, they only wanted me to play my ass off, which I did. After jamming for 20 hours straight on the rim of this canyon ten times bigger than our Grand Canyon, with 20,000 Marshall and Engl heads and cabs set up all around the rim's length, FB dropped to the ground in blues bliss, with only his butt hole intact. The aliens made a few small repairs and gave FB his buns back. He now plays in a permanent Patonga band every year during the summer months called BLACK EYES BIG AND BLUE. They rock. And I need to get off this forum and find a day job. Thank you, and God bless. I, ..........I'm going to cry! Booo hooooooo..................STOP IT AND ROCK!

I think you are correct about social access...and the Craigs List assumptions... Others have suggested this and I agree. The networking makes sense... Now if I could just show up , smile, have a laugh buy some rounds for the others... and get them into a studio with me before the end of 2012

number one you arent that great a musician in the first place

Well... thanks...

Someone mentioned "drugs bad mmmm??" Well, I been flying high like Ozzy Osborne on "Flying High Again.....Again......Again.......echo echo. Narcotics of many flavors and thank God c'os otherwise I'd be the most depressed person in the world. Everyday normal feelings simply aren't in my DNA. 30 years and never once had to put myself in a stinking prison called Detox. Guess I'm from another planet - Patonga.

I need no lecturing. Some of the worst criminal minds in history were not druggies, like good 'ol Ted Bundy and Jeffery Dharma. I think more people should be on very low doses of Ecstasy. America is in denial, there are a lot of down and out people in the work place but they won't admit it. They're the ones who show up at cool weekend parties, have one stiff drink then go home all depressed. Me, I don't leave until the sun comes up. Yep, I'm feeling fine.
