Rhythmman is now a guest? I wanted to go back and listen to his song again to check to see how "out of tune" it was. When I listen to a tune I listen to the overall impression of the song. I'm not picking it apart, whether it's out of tune, exactly what the guitar is doing, the exact progression, exactly what chords are being played and when. I really don't care. You can get into a paralysis by analysis situation by finding faults (sometimes trivially minute) in different aspects of a tune. I don't care about theory, whether somebody is playing the "proper scales" etc. What I care most about is the EMOTION I feel when listening to a song. I never try to impress anybody on a technical level, I want them to ENJOY THE SONG. If I want to express anger in a song, I want the listener to FEEL the anger. I'm not a technically trained musician. I just play and play and play, for thirty years. I may be playing a bunch of the wrong notes, I may be out of tune at times, I might be a total idiot when it comes to the "science" of what I do, BUT I guarantee you're not going to kick me out of your band based on what I play. You might kick me out because of a personality conflict, that happens in almost every band. But I put everything into each note, I get a superior, signature tone, I play a percussive bass in sync with the drummer, and I back up the lead guitarist and DON'T interfere with what they are doing. Jerry Dowell called me a "righteous" bass player. High praise form a great musician.
It's too bad rhythmman is now a guest. Perhaps he IS too sensitive to take criticism. If you post music on here you can expect some critique. That's one of the great things about this forum. You'll get lots of opinions by people with many different viewpoints. KEEP the critiques coming...and don't take them too seriously. I can't stand some filthy rich and world famous artists. I can critique them until I'm blue in the face, but there's countless people who buy their tunes, just as I'm sure many people enjoy rhythmman's music (I do). This thread became a pretty heated debate. Kind of surprised me...
