Hey guys, I originally posted this on my music marketing blog but I thought it might come in handy for you too, let me know what you think.

The 5 Hidden Secrets of Success in Music (and LIFE!)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, you think you’ve got the talent and the good looks right?
Well these two alone will not get you on the road to being a professional musician if you neglect the essential success factors below.
You should keep the following things in mind as you make daily progress with your music career.
1.PASSION. You have to be passionate about whatever you do. As a musician, you need to be passionate about your songs and your fans. Sing because you love to sing. Sing because you want to entertain. Fame and fortune will follow if you are passionate about this chosen career.
It’s weird but people are attracted to passion and they will want to help you.
2. WORK. Having passion alone is not enough. Bring that passion into action. What would happen if you were passionate about music but you did nothing about it? Always strive to better yourself and your craft. If you need to do vocal workshops to polish your singing voice, do it. If you need to work on your backing tracks and grooves, do something about it too.
3. FOCUS. In order for you to get where you want to go, you have to maintain your focus. Set a time frame for yourself. Where do you want to be 5 years down the road? What things do you wish to achieve within that period? It’s vital for you to know what you want and focus on it. Do you want to be an R&B artist or a balladeer? Determine where you think you’ll excel and work on it without losing your focus.
4. PERSIST. You will surely encounter some bumps along the road in your pursuit to be known as a musical gem, but it’s important for you to hold on to your dreams. Never pay attention to hecklers and trolls. They will do you no good. Don’t be frustrated if you think there are no opportunities for you. As they say, every dog has his chance. (I’m not saying you’re a dog
Persist in what you want and make daily progress.
5. SHARE. You know why Oprah Winfrey is so damn successful? Because she knows how to be grateful and give back (I know that sounds cheesy). She doesn’t dilly-dally in sharing whatever blessings she has, empowering the lives of millions of people in many ways. As a musician, you can do the same by giving back to the fans and treating them like your best friend. It doesn’t matter how big or small you give back: it’s how sincere you are in doing so.
I know that telling you to be Oprah Winfrey is a little bit vague so let me give you an action step to follow.
Pick one of the people on your mailing list and write a song for them.
Then send them a personal message and tell them that you appreciate their fanship and you just felt inspired.
If you get this right it will be one of the most viral things you’ve done and that person will be a fan for life.
Good luck,
- Chris
