Hey guys, I originally posted this on my music marketing blog but I thought it might come in handy for you too, let me know what you think.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 5 Hidden Secrets of Success in Music (and LIFE!)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, you think you’ve got the talent and the good looks right? ;-)

Well these two alone will not get you on the road to being a professional musician if you neglect the essential success factors below.

You should keep the following things in mind as you make daily progress with your music career.

1.PASSION. You have to be passionate about whatever you do. As a musician, you need to be passionate about your songs and your fans. Sing because you love to sing. Sing because you want to entertain. Fame and fortune will follow if you are passionate about this chosen career.

It’s weird but people are attracted to passion and they will want to help you.

2. WORK. Having passion alone is not enough. Bring that passion into action. What would happen if you were passionate about music but you did nothing about it? Always strive to better yourself and your craft. If you need to do vocal workshops to polish your singing voice, do it. If you need to work on your backing tracks and grooves, do something about it too.

3. FOCUS. In order for you to get where you want to go, you have to maintain your focus. Set a time frame for yourself. Where do you want to be 5 years down the road? What things do you wish to achieve within that period? It’s vital for you to know what you want and focus on it. Do you want to be an R&B artist or a balladeer? Determine where you think you’ll excel and work on it without losing your focus.

4. PERSIST. You will surely encounter some bumps along the road in your pursuit to be known as a musical gem, but it’s important for you to hold on to your dreams. Never pay attention to hecklers and trolls. They will do you no good. Don’t be frustrated if you think there are no opportunities for you. As they say, every dog has his chance. (I’m not saying you’re a dog ;-) Persist in what you want and make daily progress.

5. SHARE. You know why Oprah Winfrey is so damn successful? Because she knows how to be grateful and give back (I know that sounds cheesy). She doesn’t dilly-dally in sharing whatever blessings she has, empowering the lives of millions of people in many ways. As a musician, you can do the same by giving back to the fans and treating them like your best friend. It doesn’t matter how big or small you give back: it’s how sincere you are in doing so.

I know that telling you to be Oprah Winfrey is a little bit vague so let me give you an action step to follow.

Pick one of the people on your mailing list and write a song for them.

Then send them a personal message and tell them that you appreciate their fanship and you just felt inspired.

If you get this right it will be one of the most viral things you’ve done and that person will be a fan for life.

Good luck,

- Chris

Passion is the transmission. Music is an outlet for most deep thinking musicians. I think the fame and fortune part is overrated...way overrated. The media loves to cover up cavities by bleaching them for the public with success stories by those from the wrong side of the tracks who "made it". There's 100's more stories in this world about those who didn't, but you'll never hear about those. Nobody is getting arena status fame anymore, and nobody is really making any money. The more people know about you, the more they'll take from you.

Amen on the work comment!

Having a plan and writing it down should be your focus. It's there as a blue print, but that focus is subject to change as your circumstances do.

Persist with passion! Because you love what you do. A humble puppy won't expect too much to start with, and may not get the opportunity he deserves. In the end, your reward IS your WORK. Nobody can take that away from you. It's sentimental. And yes, never tell naysayers about your dreams and plans! They won't get it. People are mostly optimistic when it refers to their dreams, or only if something looks reachable.

These days, it's still good to share, but there's many available avenues for people to take from you i.e. the internet...etc. But people will want to see you do good if you're generous. DO NOT be like Oprah and give just for the public eye to see. If you're not famous like her, then fans will catch on to your fake ways.

Overall, I give the page a C. I see that you're being positive, and I endorse that 100%! I know I probably seemed a little bit negative, but I was just being realistic, actually. I would really hate to see some of these really young guys with scholarships out there, give everything away to try to become successful by this cruel world's standards.

Time's are a changin', and people need to adapt. The model for glamour looks a bit different these days.

Yeah, good post.
I don't agree with the rebuttal; it's only one point of view - most pessimists claim that they are realists.

When I strayed from music and went into sales, I studied many great inspirational type works.

Ogg Mandino was one. The greatest salesman in the world. It had a similar theme to what you posted. and it was an interesting story based on biblical times (and no not religious)

Treat each day as if it was your last. Wake up and thank the day for being alive and make the day count.

Are you referring to me as a pessimist? Do you know me?

I don't see any famous people here.

Well, INfamous, maybe. Maybe micro-famous! (holds index fingers an inch apart) In this little area, I'm HUGE!

Better to be be micro-famous rather than Scott Baio famous. His fame is for being corny.

Willie Aames, his douchie sidekick from Zapped! and Chachi In Charge got it worse. He's not even Bibleman anymore!

It takes a douchie to know a douchie, eh? Their current retirement plan is obviously better than most, at the moment.

My sincerest apologies to chris-rockett, the OP, for my scornful response that resulted from the failure that was in my mindset at the time.
