The biggest problem I've had with the addict is that it causes so many OTHER problems...being on time, being fit to work, having your equipment together, drama drama drama, personality issues, lying, stealing, etc...all while being totally able to justify anything & everything, or excuse it away.

I was a junkie / alcoholic.
I beat the odds.
Damn few people can.
Don't claim to be different, special, or better.
None the less DAMN FEW people have the will.

I'd go with the guy with the solid skills. Train him up in your music and he can own it.

The doper had his shot...

Go with the guy that has the best chemistry with the band.

Can you take the old drummer on a probationary basis?

If it was me, I'd allow him back in on the idea he was probate.
(anything goes on and he's out on his ass)

In the meantime, take your 2nd choice and rehearse the sh*t out of him.

I.e> if the older, better, substance drummer goes bonkers, get rid of him and seamlessly move new drummer into the mix.

I'd even have both of them at the rehearsals and tell the first guy he is on notice. They won't get along, but I bet the drumming will be better than usual and hey, that could be just what THE FARLEYS NEED.

you're asking too much with this one, it'd be awkward for both the new and the old guy and me personally, I'm walking out saying "don't put me in the middle of this." if I'm the new guy...make your decision, base it on what you think is right, and go with it. Dont look back, if the new guy needs time, give it to him, if you keep the addict, you're justv repeating the cycle that lead you where you are now. Go with the new guy and be done with it. Remain friends with the addict and support him entirely, help him if you can, but dont allow him back in the band. IMPO anyway.

Not a big deal. If you wanna play and you want to get paid, you will go along with the program.

And if the old drummer bitches, he can be reminded of why things are the way they are.

The new guy knows none of the material, he is there to rehearse (note: not the same as practice). How can he be of use not knowing any of the material>?

I believe every position should have a back-up.
Players on The Farleys can be back-ups for other bands too.
We all need help sometimes.
It's called being a union of musicians without the beurocracy.

Back up for equipment is one thing. A back up for each member of the Band

Hell I was lucky, blessed, and worked for months just to get the guys we have.


That ain't going to happen.
A great concept ... kinda like world peace.

I know sans, but bands in big cities have access to a lot of other players and for them it's a reality to find a back-up.
How handy being able to never cancel a gig because one person has
an emergency.

No doubt that would be cool. A logistic nightmare. But cool.

Nothing good long term ever comes from playing with an addict or alcoholic. I'd suggest going with somebody sober, stone cold sober.
