Not at all! One hunts morels for the TASTE, cuz there ain't an effect.

These are, wothout a doubt, the very best mushrooms I've ever eaten. Only slightly different from the Chanterelles, yet usually bigger & meatier.

The ones I'm finding are kinda small, though, & that puzzles me, since we had the snows that seem to help them to grow last winter. They can get up to 11" tall, & 3" in circumference, for one of the varieties we have.

Just jerkin your chain. LOL
I have books and studies on edible wild plants. Other than a very few though I am not brave enough to attempt them.

My grandpa taught me about those and he would always hunt those down. You're right, Phil...those are better than anything that I've ever bought from a store. :D

YOU SUCK...

Can't find morels around here, too warm. usually Chanthrelles are very rare too. I'm really jealous now...I'm doing good to find a decent Meadow Mushroom or three, even those aren't common around here. I really miss my favorite field in Texas, not far from Bryan/college Station. I would find a sandwich bag full after any decent rain...Mushroom omelets for breakfast can't be beat...

I do find some nice puffballs here though, some up to softball size. If you don't know about them, puffballs are excellent, and if it's white inside and does not smell bad, a puffball is edible. That's exactly what my mushroom ID book says, almost word for word. I've been picking wild table mushrooms...and occasionally the electric variety...for over 20 years, have a great book on them that helps ID about 500 varieties.

OK I was just kidding you really don't suck...maybe... :D

I've read about the puffballs, & they're in my field guides, too. I've never found any, though. Never bothered to see when they grow.

I have seen the parasols right in my front yard in years past, but they won't be up for awhile. Never ate them, but the book says it has a hazelnutty taste. I'll keep my eyes peeled for them this year. I do have the tools to look at the spores & stuff, so I'll be less likely to make a mistake.

When I 1st moved here, I collected some shrooms & took them to the country extension agent to see if they were edible. I had so many that I just really wanted to know what they were. They were called "Devil's Urns," & are poisonous. So yeah, checking is a must, & when in doubt, toss 'em before you eat 'em.

PUFFBALLS are edible ??

When I was a kid, there would be literally hundreds of those in my folks back yard. I used to dig em up so I could pitch them in the air and bat them with a broom stick .

Red and yellow wasp swatting with an old tennis racket was a summer favorite as well.

Correction: SOME puffballs are edible, & only at certain stages of thier life cycle. (I wouldn't wanna try them when they're all dry & dusty!)

Takes me a bit to get my mushroom eyes on, but once I find one, I'm in the zone, & I doubt I miss much in spite of these old peepers.

OK are you proposing a CHIPPY PHILBY competition. You might wind up with 300 band mix members camping out on your front lawn to watch this.

Chippy is gonna wake up and say......Duh... did I miss something?
