Gee GREAT PLOT LOL

Like I said in my original review: we've been there, we've seen that. "Dances With Wolves" anyone?

There are only so many different "stories" to go around. It's how they are told that differentiates them. I liked how this particular version was told :)

'Avatar' pulls in $1.34B, becoming 2nd highest grossing movie
of all time after 'Titanic'

James Cameron's "Avatar" dominated the North American box office for the fourth weekend in a row, earning $48.5 million and becoming the second-highest-grossing film of all time.

So far, Cameron's other mega-hit, "Titanic," which remained No. 1 for 15 weeks straight and garnered $1.8 billion in global sales, is the only movie to top the $1.34 billion worldwide earnings of "Avatar."

But box-office watchers believe that as curious movie fans flood the theaters to catch the must-see sci-fi adventure, the "Avatar" aliens could sink "Titanic."

"I believe anything is possible with this picture. Nothing would surprise me," said Bert Livingston, a 20th Century Fox distribution executive.

Meanwhile, "Daybreakers," starring Ethan Hawke as a reluctant vampire, opened at No. 4 with an estimated weekend take of $15 million.

Two other newcomers, the romantic comedy "Leap Year" and Michael Cera's dorky-teen flick "Youth in Revolt," landed in the sixth and ninth spots, earning $9.2 million and $7 million, respectively.

"Sherlock Holmes," starring Robert Downey Jr. as the iconic sleuth, spent a third weekend at No. 2 with sales of $16.6 million, and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" was No. 3 for a third week with $16.3 million.

lol Rober Downey Jr. as Sherlock Homes?

I bet he was good, but I keep seeing the guy from LESS THAN ZERO and it does damage to the character of Sherlock Homes in general.

Avatar' replaces 'Titanic' in record books
Sun Jan 24, 2010

LOS ANGELES, Jan 24 (Reuters) - "Titanic" just hit an iceberg named "Avatar."

James Cameron's sci-fi spectacular replaced his maritime melodrama as the biggest international release of all time during the weekend and is on the verge of claiming its worldwide crown, which also includes North American receipts, distributor 20th Century Fox said on Sunday.

The News Corp (NWSA.O)-owned studio said "Avatar" has sold $1.841 billion worth of tickets worldwide during its unbroken six-week reign, and was a day or so away from surpassing the seemingly insurmountable $1.843 billion racked up by "Titanic" in 1997-1998.

The international portion stands at $1.288 billion, eclipsing the $1.242 billion haul of "Titanic."

In North America, "Avatar" may have to wait up to two weeks to sink the $601 million total of "Titanic," Fox said. Moviegoers in the United States and Canada have chipped in $552.8 million, enough to replace 2008's "The Dark Knight" ($533 million) as the second-biggest movie of all time.

Data are not adjusted for inflation, and "Avatar" ticket sales got an additional boost from premium pricing for 3-D screenings. Imax Corp (IMAX.O) said its big-screen engagements have sold a record $134 million worth of tickets worldwide.

The biggest movie of all time in North America -- adjusted for inflation -- is 1939's "Gone with the Wind," with sales of almost $1.5 billion, according to tracking firm Box Office Mojo. "Avatar" ranks No. 26 by that measure.

"AVATAR" RULES IN FRANCE, CHINA

During the latest weekend, "Avatar" earned $36 million in North America and $107 million from 111 international markets, far outpacing other offerings.

It led the field in at least 29 foreign markets, including France ($123 million to date), China ($102 million), Germany ($96 million), Russia ($95 million) and Britain ($93 million).

In North America, "Avatar" was trailed by the new supernatural action thriller "Legion" at No. 2 with $18.2 million, while the Denzel Washington drama "The Book of Eli" slipped to No. 3 with $17 million in its second weekend.

"Legion," released by Sony Corp's (6758.T) (SNE.N) Screen Gems budget label, cost about $25 million to make, and played primarily to men, the studio said. Paul Bettany, Lucas Black and Tyrese Gibson star in the tale of an of-the-way diner that becomes the unlikely battleground for the survival of the human race.

"Eli," a similarly themed apocalyptic drama released by Time Warner Inc's (TWX.N) Warner Bros. Pictures on behalf of independent producer Alcon Entertainment, has earned $62 million after 10 days.

Two other films opened in the top-10: Fox's Dwayne Johnson family film "The Tooth Fairy" at No. 4 with a promising $14.5 million, and the Harrison Ford medical drama "Extraordinary Measures" at No. 7 with a disappointing $7 million.

"Extraordinary Measures" is the debut release of CBS Corp's (CBSa.N) CBS Films, which said its fact-based storyline about a father trying to save the lives of his children made it a tough sell. Older audiences in the Midwest and mountain areas were the primary demographic, the studio said.

Fox said "Tooth Fairy" played well across the board, despite or because of its depiction of former wrestler Johnson, a.k.a. "The Rock" in a tutu and wings.

"It's a very sweet, wonderful message movie," said Chris Aronson, Fox's senior vice-president of domestic distribution. (Reporting by Dean Goodman; Editing by Cynthia Osterman) (To read more about our entertainment news, visit our blog "Fan Fare" online at http:/blogs.reuters.com/fanfare/)

There's something I just don't like about Dwayne johnson...

I still haven't come up with the funds to see any movies, yet, but if & when I ever do, Avatar is definitely on my list.

It is now OFFICIALLY the top grossing movie of all time!

Broke the Titanic record, by 50 Million, and I think the Titanic "count" has been going on for 13 years! Sales tally is cumulative! This movie has been out, what? A few months? And already surpassed it!

Wow!

Finally saw this last night. It was quite enjoyable, but I wonder if it's really worth all the hype.

The CGI was impressive, but far from perfect. It was a very pretty movie, though.

I can see why the churches are uptight about it, with the alternate religious overtone.

I didn't get the anti-American war machine sentiment from it, though. I did see the anti-corporate monster view, & the anti-merc. Doesn't bother me at all. It's just a frikken movie, & unlikely to change my views in any way.

I thought Sigourney's avatar looked a hell of a lot better than her real self, even if it was blue. The ending was way too predictable, but at least they didn't junk it up.

The critters & such could have been designed much more creatively than they were, though, imho.

The deus ex machina solution to the problems was cheesy, too.

I give it a solid "B" for story-line, & an A- for cinematography & effects.

'Avatar' DVD to hit stores on April 22 (Earth Day)
by Chris Nashawaty

The biggest movie of all time is finally headed to your living room. Twentieth Century Fox announced that it will release Avatar on DVD and Blu-Ray on April 22 — Earth Day. But if you’re planning on taking a hammer to your piggy bank and racing out to buy one of those pricey 3-D TVs, hold up a sec. The home version of James Cameron’s f/x-a-palooza will only be available in 2-D. Additionally, the $29.98 DVD and $39.99 Blu-Ray will not come packed with extras — or any extras at all — because both Cameron and the studio wanted to deliver the film in all of its ground-breaking digital glory, which, of course, takes up precious disc space. Nevertheless, Fox says that a loaded, multi-disc edition will hit stores in November.

As for Avatar’s Earth Day release date — which falls on a Thursday instead of the usual Tuesday DVD drop date — Cameron and Co. believe that the date makes sense because of the movie’s ecological themes. Without seeing it, we have no idea how a film as epic (in every sense of the word) as Avatar will play on the small screen. But we do know this: the fastest-selling DVD of all time (that would be Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, which managed to move 3 million DVDs on its first day back in December 2008) better get ready to be bumped down a peg.

Will you run out and buy Avatar on Earth Day, or will you wait for the loaded version in November…or buy both…or neither? Let’s hear from you.

That's funny. I just read that they were planning on a theatrical re-release this summer, with extended clips & such.

Hmmmph. I reckon that if I buy it at all, I'll wait until it hits the $5 bin. LOL

I wasn't as blown away as I had expected to be, after all the hype.
