Just a heads up in case anyone will be replacing Fender tuners anytime soon. One of my Teles had a couple of injured tuners so I bought a new set of Grovers. They were the regular Fender style with the slot, and hole where the string goes in on the top. These tuners were absolute pieces of garbage. One of the things I love about Telecasters is how stable the tuning is on them. With these tuners, if you're lucky enough to get the guitar in tune, good luck keeping it in tune. My bandmate had a set of Gotoh Fender style tuners kicking around that he didn't need, and I just restrung the Tele (Esquire actually) and problem solved. It's like night and day, so I would recommend the Gotohs over the Grovers if you want to save some headaches.

I put those Planet Waves tuners on my Strat about 6 years ago and I love them. It takes 5 minutes to change my strings. They are the kind that are self trimming with very stable tuning. When you put your strings on you pull it tight by hand thru the tuning machine and there is a clamp on the back that you tighten with your other hand when you go to start wrapping the string it automatically trims the excess string and only wraps less than a quarter turn. I hope that makes sense. I highly recommend them over 6 years and not one single problem. The set is about $80.00 if my memory serves me right.

Yes, I hear you philb, I can't figure out what could be going so wrong inside the Grovers that renders them unusable. The cool thing about the Gotohs, is the old looking nickel finish. I had 2 people come up to me at the gig last night wondering about the age of the Esquire based on the look of those tuners.

First time I've ever heard of trouble with Grovers too, I've had them on a couple of guitars and never a minute of trouble, always liked them really well. I've had some Gotoh tuners too and never any problems. Schaller has a good reputation too but I've never used them.

I put Grovers on one of my Pauls, love 'em. I left the stock tuners on my Strat and got a locking nut (mandatory if you're a wang bar player).

I use both Gotohs and Grovers. All my Strats have the inexpensive Ghoto tuners. I think they cost about $26.00 a set. Both work quite well for me. But you can get good and bad sets from any one.

I start my wrap from the top and work down to lessen the pressure off the pegs. Once in tune they hold pretty well. I do notice a dead space in some tuners. But slacking and then tightening up to the note seems to take care of that.

I have Ghoto tuners and a stock vibrato on the Strat in my video. That guitar does not go out of tune even the slightest when using the Vibrato as much as I do. And I use it a lot. All my other strats stay in tune as well.

I heard that Schallers are pretty good too. I was told that I can call the company and request a set for 7-string guitars. Maybe I can post a review after I install them.
