I've started a small youtube series on regognizing mode patterns via 2 strings, then begin to flush out how these modes stack on top of each other making it easer to see them (what to look for).
The first video is an intro to the modes and a small explanation of how to determine which mode "top" will follow.
The second and third tutorials are uploading as I type, and they cover a little more in depth the Ionian -> Lydian, then the Lydian to Locrian and then Locrian to Phygian progression in a scale.
