Okay...so you folk didn't like Klaatu...howzabout this icon? I love his work, too.

Feb 15 is the set release date for his new album, on which he'll be doing...well...here's the article I saw here - http://music.msn.com/2010-music-guide-m ... photoidx=4

"Like Sade, it's been almost a decade since Peter Gabriel released new, original music under his own name. "Scratch My Back," coming out Feb. 15, qualifies for only one of those descriptors: It consists of Gabriel's interpretations of 12 classic and indie rock tracks from the likes of David Bowie, Bon Iver, Paul Simon, the Arcade Fire, and Radiohead. These aren't faithful covers but forward-thinking orchestral revisions that rely heavily on Gabriel's vocal phrasings."

I just can't imagine him doing covers, but I'll bet they'll be WAY different from the originals. I have an old LP around here somewhere where he sings "Strawberry Fields Forever," I think it on "All THis And World War II." He did a very good job of that one. But a whole album of material he didn't write? I like his stuff.

HUGE Peter Gabriel fan for decades!

I'm sure his covers will be unique and well done. He doesn't f*ck around on his arrangements, which are meticulously crafted.

Very interested to see what he does with them.

Still, I would have rather heard some NEW music from him.

His album "So" got WORN OUT by me, I played it so much.

It's a masterpiece!

His duet with singer extraordinaire Kate Bush, even still, brings me to tears, and is a testimony to the American Dream going wrong, wanting to end it all when you can no longer support your family, and yet the LOVE that seeks to hold it all together, in spite of the difficulties. Having a troubled time, due to the economy? Listen to this song again, and you will purge yourself of some emotion and probably tears as well. The love and encouragement sent through this song is just phenomenal. We "ALL" need someone to encourage us, especially in the worst moments life brings us. Kate Bush's voice just brings that through, so sincerely. F*cking making me cry as I listen right now! Emotional, sentimental dumbass that I am! LOL

LOVE the arrangement on this song, the ending sequences.... Seeping into a choir, giving it a religious power, and yet the smooth funky groove maintained... Just awesome!

"Don't Give Up"
Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush

In this proud land we grew up strong
we were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

no fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my face, I've changed my name
but no one wants you when you lose

don't give up
'cos you have friends
don't give up
you're not beaten yet
don't give up
I know you can make it good

though I saw it all around
never thought I could be affected
thought that we'd be the last to go
it is so strange the way things turn

drove the night toward my home
the place that I was born, on the lakeside
as daylight broke, I saw the earth
the trees had burned down to the ground

don't give up
you still have us
don't give up
we don't need much of anything
don't give up
'cause somewhere there's a place
where we belong

rest your head
you worry too much
it's going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don't give up
please don't give up

'got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river's flowing
that river's flowing

moved on to another town
tried hard to settle down
for every job, so many men
so many men no-one needs

don't give up
'cause you have friends
don't give up
you're not the only one
don't give up
no reason to be ashamed
don't give up
you still have us
don't give up now
we're proud of who you are
don't give up
you know it's never been easy
don't give up
'cause I believe there's the a place
there's a place where we belong

Hard to believe "So" came out 24 years ago. It still sounds like it could have been released yesterday. If you haven't heard "Big Blue Ball" yet you should; Gabriel doesn't sing on it but the music is great. It's funny how you, Phil, Chippy and I can be so different yet we all agree on one thing: the man is a genius.

He's appealing to the same emotions in all of us, and quite successfully. I think he is painting a canvas of emotion, like an artist, with his arrangements and instrumentation. Whether dark, or uplifting, he gets his musical points across.

I admire his work greatly.

Not to mention that he's one of the most powerful voices in music. What a range!

Other than Solsbury Hill, I haven't liked much that I've heard of Gabriel's solo work, but loved his stuff with Genesis, both the music and the visuals in their stage shows. Phil Collins has done a great job with Genesis, (and was drummer doing backup vocals long before he took over as vocalist,) but I think I would much rather hear Peter Gabriel as Genesis vocalist. Great voice, excellent lyricist and great arrangements. Solsbury Hill was a fantastic song, one of me all time favorites.

Overall a great musician, I'm just not into the "pop" stuff he went into after he left Genesis. This cover tunes album may be excellent, can't wait to see if anything gets some radio play.

Saw the Blue Ball concert on TV a while back. Awesome. He has a way of capturing you. Did the same of course with Genesis for years before that in lyric or music form. Nice find thanks. :D
