If you want an El Cheapo that out *performs a SM58 try the Nady SPC25 at Musicians Friend for $40.00.

It sounds comparable to the SM58, but is about 3X louder before feedback. It has a double wind screen and pop filters built in to it. It gets 5 star ratings everywhere. I own two of them and they are good.

I'll check those out. Less than half the price, is awesome, if they are comparable, and also as road worthy!

I bought two for the road when I go to jam. Here are a couple of features I didn't mention.

The single AA batt lasts about 40 hours when left on.

The double windscreen/ pop filter:

The outer filter can unscrew and leave only the inner filter for miking cymbals, acoustic guitar, or other instruments.

They have flat spots all around the windscreen to keep it from rolling off a tilted surface.

It's so cheap you can out fit a whole band with them so your sound man has an easier job .

I really do like mine. I was using them for recording. Then I thought why? Especially when I have two large condenser MXL 4000 studio mikes sitting next to me.

Now they are great little mikes, but no comparison to the 4000, which can't be used on stage easily anyway because of their sensitivity.

You will not be disappointed with the Nady. And if you don't like it, Musicians Friend will take it back no questions asked.

I think the el cheapo mic was clearer on my crappy PC speakers, too.

Chip Im with others here get a Shure SM 57 or SM 58. For a spit guard hang some sort of cloth in front of the mic.

The Shure will work good for recording and playing live.

I bought an Avlex Condensor a few years ago and use it for home recording. Its done a pretty good job, but the guy who's studio I record at these days is using a SM 57 with a spit guard.

The biggy mike doesn't seem to have the proximity effect. You can be anywhere from 10 " to right up on it, and the response appears to remain about the same.
When I recorded the vocal on "I Miss Those Lies", I was right on it and singing (Loose term} in a very quiet voice.
When I recorded with the Nady, "She's Not The Girl", I was a quite a bit louder and further from the mike.

The Nady SPC25 on the other hand is more "workable" if you want a greater variance due to proximity. It is definitely more at home on a bandstand.

I believe I had the high and mid EQ up a bit more on the board when I did the song with the Nady.

Actually, both mikes are very easy to work and can you get a really professional vocal presence . If you can sing at all.

Thought i'd throw one in here, i have used the Joemeek JM47 with a Joemeek MQ3 for years, you could probably pick both of these up for around $200 and around $20 for a pop shield, the mic has a bass roll off switch (your rumble issue) and the preamp has a nice compressor and eq and is a better front end than any budget mixer channel. this set up will be a thousand times better than just buying a '58 and you can get it as a box set too. Buy it secondhand and dont look back

Thanks for the posts and advice people. I've heard a lot of recordings of late which tell many stories, all were good and very pro like.

I just don't have amount of cash that available and my goal is to create something as best I can on my own. I'm not doing too bad, I've got some ways to go before I can catch up of course.

I've made some notes from this thread but at the end of the day, it's about enjoyment for me personally because I'm not a musician in the technical sense. Just a drummer.

Drummers "ARE" musicians. We have had a whole thread on this before, and a few people did disagree, but the definition of a "musician" is simply, a person who "plays a musical instrument"

Drums are a percussive musical instrument.

They have various pitches, from toms and bass drums to cymbals, etc...
