Scientists Push "Doomsday Clock" Back a Minute
January 14, 2010

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Scientists pushed back the hands on the symbolic Doomsday Clock by one minute citing hopeful developments in nuclear weapons and climate change.

The symbolic clock that shows how close mankind is to self-annihilation was moved back to six minutes before midnight from five minutes on Thursday.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, which maintains the clock and puts an illustration of it on its cover, attributed the move to efforts by world leaders to reduce their countries' nuclear arsenals and collaborate on climate stabilization.

The group, which includes 19 Nobel laureates, said a key to the "new era of cooperation is a change in the U.S. government's orientation toward international affairs brought about in part by the election of (U.S. President Barack) Obama."

Nuclear physicist Pervez Hoodbhoy at news conference held at the National Academy of Sciences overlooking the World Trade Center site, said there had been "a shift in world opinion" recognizing that nuclear weapons are "no longer useful to fight wars and are not effective as deterrence."

BAS board member Lowell Sachnoff added, "Global warming is more of a threat than nuclear war."

When the clock was created in 1947, it was set at 7 minutes to midnight. It has been adjusted only 18 times before Thursday' move. The last was in 2007, when the BAS moved it forward by two minutes citing North Korea's test of a nuclear weapon, Iran's nuclear ambitions and a renewed U.S. emphasis the military utility of nuclear weapons.

What a load of Bollox.
No one wants to die. Your dead, that's it, gone nada, done with. Except the trace elements which will again rejoin that void and shape one day millions of years into something else.

I have faith in the race oddly. I think we can overcome anything that is put in our path provided there are no people around who constantly place hurdles and "You're going to die" messages in front of us.

Utter complete Bollox.

the terrorists of the world want to inspire terror... the xmas day failed underwear bomb was actually the most successful campaign to date, we actually have greater flying restrictions than we did after 9-11.

Every major network is STILL fear-mongering about it...

These end-timers and others who claim to measure how close we are to blowing ourselves up are all just terrorists of another ilk.

Some of the worst terrorists in the world live right here in the USA, masquerading as concerned citizens/leaders while at the same time, they consistently whittle away our civil rights.

I sincerely hope the end-timers get their wish.

We are all going to drop dead sooner or later, why even worry about it? The Earth has repeatedly been hit with catastrophic events that caused mass extinctions planet wide. It's going to happen again, just a matter of time so why even be concerned about it?

Ppl who think that WE are the only thing that could destroy us crack me up.

Besides, why are they moving it back a minute after N Korea's & Iran's recent actions? Cuz some ppl are TALKING about removing thier arsenals?

Dumbness! I'm not impressed.

by 2050 we will hit peak oil (long before, probably)

Oceans will be long fished out

The poles will have crumbled into the seas, melting billions of gallons of fresh water into the oceans, permanently altering the currents and bringing only what we can guess will be the next ice-age prematurely.

GM farms will begin have failed by that point, Organic farms won't come close to filling the gap, billions (more) will starve. Currently 1 billion ppl world-wide are considered to be starving, and for no good reason other than profits.. (but that's another post..)

So we're F'd. Enjoy what you got, while you got it. Have less kids, you will feel less guilty about their future suffering, and their kids'

Have a nice day.

2050 ?? LOL

I have some inside info from "Big Oil" due to my family ties.
If we were going to "peak" on oil in a mere 40 years they would switch to selling condoms or diapers by now. LOL
We don't have the technology (yet) to even tap the majority of the earths oil reserves.
Don't be fooled by scare tactic intended to cover for artificially inflated prices.
Most of the oil reserves calculated and some even located leave the "Big Oil" feeling like freshmen, looking at the Senior high cheerleaders just dreaming of ways to be able to drill there.
