I am a 35 yo bassist and want to play in a heavy metal band. I am taking lessons from an awesome instructor and want to put what I have learned to use. I was wondering is it hard to find a band that would take in a beginning bassist ? I understand the chords, bass lines, and music reading part. Is it too late for me.....????

It's never too late! You should be able to do all right because bassists (generaly) have less pressure on them.

no, it should be hard to find a group... but they will likely be near your level of playing... and afa reading music... I doubt very highly you are going to need to know how to do that to play in a metal band...
my advice would be: learn the scales. three notes per string method. If you know the major scale in all positions: you will be good to go for 99% of metal cause major is minor.

here's a start

g major scale - learn the shape... worry about the notes later.

Dude keep it going like people have already said, you're never too old to play music,

Guitarists are a dime a dozen; play bass and you will get a gig sometime; play along to MTV or CD's if you can, anything helps

Keeping time is critical! Down load something like fruity loops. Then you can set your tempo, and make simple drum loops. Use the patterns you have learned and improv. You will be surprised how fast this will improve your skill and comfort! Keep pushing forward bro! KEEP IT KILL!!!

Tempo is critical.
See if you can split the beat right down the middle.
