I think she's over-hyped. She has a good voice, but I think it's the "story" of a dream come true that is driving her popularity, not her voice. It's a rags to riches, overcoming the odds kind of story that people fantasize about.

I think the media will "handle it" for her. She could go nuts (like Prince) from all the attention, but a good story doesn't get trashed until it's been bled dry, then it is just faded away into silence.

I'm happy for her. i rather like the story myself and hope she does very well. It's not her voice that I like tho.

I will add that Im glad that someone like her got the chance that shes been given, but can she handle it, thats the next question?

Chris,

Did you listen to her singing "Wild Horses" that I posted a link to?

Whether it's your style of music or not... listen to her tone, and listen to it a good way through, and hear her powerful highs. She has a very rich voice, not only power, but dynamic tone, and she controls it VERY well, switching from softer nuanced parts into soaring power and highs, and her control of her vibrato as well... just, many things.

Maybe it's something only a vocalist can appreciate to that extent?

A good vocalist, knows what goes into having control like that.

Wait till Paul hears it, and comments. :-)

Actually I had not heard her sing that - she does have an awesome voice, based on that song, no doubt. Reminds me of a cross between Streisand and Celine a little actually.
