I think 80's / 90's, metal (ozzy/dio) transitioned into neo-classical yngvie metal, then people got burned on all the speedy solo stuff, and Depechemode got hooked up with metallica into a blender and out came Nirvana with a smoker's voice. At that point, grunge began to all sound alike, much the same as did neo-classical before it. Then someone really upset that Curt died, recorded an angry song with screaming, and everyone thought "hey, that's new". So everyone stopped trying to sing, and a whole sector of angry people got to scream songs instead of sing them. But not everyone was equally angry, instead they were only kindof angry so isntead of screaming, they growled. So now there's really angry, and kindof angry. It's just a matter of time when someone gets pissed off, and I don't exactly know what that will sound like, but give it a little time and it too will all sound the same. There really are, after all, only a few reasons to be angry and they've all been cried about already, so likely it will be a rehash of 99 cleft balloons, bring in the clowns, I shot the sherrif and a myriad of other already visited emotions recorded to some pissed off irritating sound (perhaps fingernail scratching, or monkey wrench clanging).

Everything has its day. Remember waiting for disco to pass. In the sixties some were waitin for Dilon like music to pass then came your metal like ZEP and others. Some may have waited for the GRUNGE of Seattle to disapear. What I hear now and I am waiting to disapear is the fake music of todays hits. Fake voice, Fake guitar, Fake background singers, empty writing, mundane lyrics and juvenile sound of todays music hits. Dylan, Cobain and Lennon would just shake their heads in disgust.

Why would anyone ever cut up a recording tape and splice it back together?

Who would ever want to use 10 tons of compression on each recorded track?

Why would anyone ever switch from acoustic to electric?

Is CW still around?

Like anything metal has changed and evolved over the years. Believe it or not we used to call Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Uriah Heep "Heavy Metal"; most people just classify those bands as hard rock now. Then came Black Sabbath and changed everything, followed by Judas Priest and a whole bunch of other bands that wore the heavy metal moniker. In fact, people don't even call it "Heavy Metal" anymore, it's just metal now, with all its factions - death metal, black metal, etc. I doubt metal will ever really die - loud, distorted guitars, bass and drums will always remain popular - but the voice of metal has changed a lot. There's a ton of metal bands, check out www.myspace.com/girlscouthandgrenade, www.myspce.com/the2ndsystem or www.myspace.com/idecay for some excellent Michigan metal.

KLUGMO, I know that hell is going to rain down upon me for saying this, but I can't believe you mentioned Cobain in the same sentence as Lennon and Dylan...REALLY?
It's like that crappy redneck woman song (Gretchen Wilson) when she mentions Kid Rock in between Lynyrd Skynyrd and George Strait...

Skynyrd-Southern rock legends.
George Strait-Country Music Icon.

Kid Rock...Jeeez, don't get me started!

I'm just raggin' on y'all...BANG YER HEAD!!!

Joe, there's a whole generation of people who idolized Cobain as much as the previous generations idolized Dylan and Lennon. We could debate each artist's relative merits as a musician and lyricist but in the end our opinions don't mean much, it's what the people want that matters.

I do agree that Kid Rock is a crock, but again there's a lot of people who dig him. Go figure.

Yeah, I just felt like stirring something up.
I know that Cobain made a HUGE impression on a lot of people...just not me. Just expressing my opinion, and we all know what opinions are like...(o).
