If I had my way I'd never ever ever play a cover ever.
I'll never go so far as to never play ANY cover. I think you should do whatever song you want, whether it's a cover or your own. If you concentrate solely on originals theoretically you'll get closer to recording a legitimate CD of your own material than if you mess around with covers.

We have some covers we do..... and I like em ok.
But you know, my being new to this wonderful world. Nothing is quite as satisfying to me as creation.
That's where I get the Gung Fu rush.
Man it's like a drug.
Being our band goal is somewhat different than most.
And this being my only real experience with such.
I guess my personal "needs fulfillment" is somewhat different than most as well.
Not special or better mind you.
Just different.

I've met many musicians whose needs fulfillment consisted of nothing more than earning a few extra bucks and getting a few extra drinks...some of us have more lofty needs fulfillment...

That song PACKS the dance floor every time. As sick as I am of that song I will play it at every gig because that is what the people like period. So as long as the people that I am playing for want to hear it I will play it because that is who I work for. They also Like Heart Of The Matter by Don Henly, The Flame by Cheap Trick, Love Of A Lifetime by Firehouse (Great wedding song by the way) Something by the Beatles.

Cracks me up at how many women love that damned "Wonderful Tonight." Do they not know what it's about?

A guy goes & gets himself a trophy g/f, takes her out all dressed up to make him look good, gets himself sh*tfaced & she hasta carry his sorry ass home & pour him into bed. Now THAT, ladies & germs, is what I call ROMANTIC!

LMAO!

Kramerguy and Philbymon both made some fantastic points...while I do believe that the cover band is there to "do a job", i.e., entertain the audience, there are thousands upon thousands of songs to choose from...certainly there is SOMETHING that falls into that general area that suits both needs-the audience recognizes it and digs it, and you enjoy playing it as well. As Phil said, a lot of it is what the audience EXPECTS to hear from you. I've been jamming with a band that wants to play Meatallica (yes, that was intentional) and Alice in Chains, but they want to gig in classic rock venues. Unless they enjoy moving their equipment that much, it's not going to happen. The moment they break into that stuff, they'll be unplugged and escorted to an open door. My point is that not only knowing your audience, but also knowing what they expect from you is essential.

That one truly lame song made somebody (I can't remember his name of course) filthy rich and subsequently his daughter filthy rich (I can't remember her name either.) I wish I could come up with something so lame that it makes me filthy rich. It's better than winning the lottery...

And I am starting to wonder about the rest of you old FARTS! I think you GUYS ARE A BUNCH OF pu**y'S and I am feeling sorry for most of your wifes (except for Crypts) You guy's really need to get in touch with your feminine side. Oh Yeah I forgot to list Europa is a great slow dance song also.

Ahh my friend. You see that's where you are mistaken!
The idea is to touch her feminine side in a most excellent fashion.
That way I don't have to have a feminine side. 8)

I got in touch with my feminine side once. It bitched me out and told me it needed it's space and to leave it the hell alone. Hmmm....must've been THAT time of the month for my feminine side.
