I've got a PC and lately I'm getting infected by more and more viruses. I subscribe to Geeks On Site and they have been very busy lately removing viruses from my PC (it costs me about $25 per month, doesn't matter how many times I call them). I'm just wondering if any of you with PC's are also experiencing more viruses lately. It's really annoying.

We use PCs exclusively at work, and I havent noticed any increase in infection attempts.

I use Mac exclusively at home, so... dont have to worry about it really.

#1 advice I could give you off the top of my head is, 'If you use Internet Explorer, stop. Use a different web browser'.

And just say no to bittorrent.

I havent been experiencing more viruses per se... buit my antivirus software has been alerting me alot more than usual.

I use Firefox as a browser, as to more viruses seem to geared towards internet explorer and my friends that have Macs and use the Leopard system seem to never get viruses.

But eitherway, I use Trend Micro Anti virus and its only 10 bucks a year and I rarely have anything slip by. Also, I scan EVERYTHING before I allow it onto my computer... it seems to be doing the job pretty well..

Get a mac or use Linux. Costs me sweet nothing and zero viruses.

My main computer I use with my busines is in the shop right now infected by some virus. Damn thing crashed hard after a power outage on wednesday. Being computer illiterate doesn't help either.

But its another day in Paradise !!!

I have a 300 gig hard drive and it's divided into 3 partitions. 25 G for Windows, 25 G for Linux and the rest is storage that can be accessed from either. I have the internet disabled on the Windows side and only get online from Linux. I only use Windows because there are a couple of programs that I need Windows to run and as soon as I find comparable programs in Linux, Windows is out the door.

I hear you #1, the more computer literate you become the less virus's you will have it is that way for me LOL!

And be sure to use trusted names in virus protection (like Jimmy). My dad bought a virus protection program online for 80 bucks, downloaded it, and his computer went to hell. Turned out the program WAS a virus. He got his money back from his credit card company, but we had to wipe his hard drive out and reinstall everything. It was a bitch.

I use AVG Free antivirus / resident shield. It does a great job, but the main reason I use it is that it uses very little resources. Unlike Mcafee and Norton, which slow the PC down to a grinding halt...

So anyways, my wife uses internet explorer and I use firefox.. I have zero viruses and my wife has them increasingly regularly.

I'm online a lot - 90% of it is to sites like MYSpace, BMI, ASCAP, Song Placement, Yahoo, MSNMail, . . . posting ads . . .

I have caught Zero viruses in the last few years.

Norton Security works good for me.
I also Norton to clear out my internet browsing cache regularly, and scan the areas most likely to be infected, which is a one - click item.

Again - PC, Windows XP, Norton.
ZERO Viruses.

I don't think it matters in the least if you have a PC or a MAC.

But - what DOES matter is your internet habits, and what should be your normal computer-housekeeping.

By the way - if you ever get an official-looking message that says "your computer is infected with a viruse," while you are on-line,
. . . . You need to know that THAT IS A VIRUS, and it is asking your help to infect your computer.
.
Do NOT Click ANYTHING - not even the "X" that closes the box on the screen.
Use Ctrl / Alt / Del, and discontinue your online session that way.
Otherwise, if you click anything (like a bogus "X") you can infect your computer.
That's right - immediately go offline.
And then immediately clear your internet cache,.
And then immediately do a virus scan of the areas most-likely to be infected.

Also - REMEMBER which site it is where that virus came from, and never visit it again.

If you are lazy, and skip any of these steps, you're taking a risk, and - how on earth could the possible consequences be worth risking? And - you won't even have the satisfaction of bloodying the face of the virus-writer.

And, hey, you DO make sure that your antivirus definitions are no more than a day or 2 out of date, DON'T YOU?
And, you do a full-system scan once a week, DON'T YOU?

At the moment unfortunately for you people using Windows yes it does matter.

Linux/Macs are not prone to windows viruses. The whole architecture is different. I'm not saying it won't happen. I don't run any anti virus software at all, haven't done for over a year now, I don't have to. I do have a firewall that's rarely used.

It's wonderful to be FREE RM. Right now I'm rendering videos on Linux. Also free of viruses and software costs.
