General Music Chat

Last night we had gig at a restaurant and live music venue.

Keith Emerson was in the audience and I knew it. I never get nervous on stage ... but Keith's presents rattled me. Then in the middle of a raggie groove (I'm on tour with a reggie artist) a hand flies passed me and starts playing my snyth while I was playing the Hammond. Keith and I seg-wayed into some Prog Rock jam over the reggie groove for about 10 mins and I started to settle down and play like I now I can ... I was fine after that.

I knew I was going to be playing with Keith on Thursday Night, we are doing Fanfare for the Common Man and Lucky Man and wasn't nervous about that at all, but have Keith in the audience, listening to my playing ... What can I say the guy was a GOD back in my Prog Rock days (early 70's) and still is in my eyes.

The film crew that is on tour with us caught the action ... but I don't expect to see any footage for a while.

Keith came across as a very gracious person .. no rock star syndrome and he made me feel welcome to comp to what he was doing ...

Keith and Wakeman, changed my direction on playing Hammond. I was playing 50' & 60's pop song in strip clubs ... then I heard Keith playing .. I said f*#k this sh*t and started learning Prog Rock ... he and Rick were my GOD's in the early 70's

Not that it matters, but I put my pants on both legs at the same time.
It's an old freezing your butt off at deer camp trick that stuck with me all these years.

Now THAT is so cool. Glad you didn't freeze up. Something like that would petrify lots of ppl, suddenly being in a jam-out situation with an idol.

Fanfare is a good piece. I do hope you get some sort of recoeding when you do that, Ron.

How did Mystic Bowie react when you guys started going off the well-worn path?

Phil ... Mystic is cool with seg-ways ... he loves to jam out ... Sat night we did a cover song (Ain't no love - Whitesnake) for 3/4 of an hour. We went though at lest 4 different grooves ... including reggie .. prog rock ... funk to name a few and Mystic loved it ... this band can realy get out there and fly be the seat of their pants ... monster players. Mystic held the crowd though the whole 3/4 of a hour ... I've never seen anything like it.

I bringing John Ellis as my dinner date, my wife can't make the show.

We have a monster jam session afterparty in a penthouse with all the players that will go on into the weeeee hours of the night. Keith phoned me this morning to make sure I was bring the Hammond to the afterparty ... I said "Hell yea"

It's going to be a cool time tonight ... alot of work for me (I have about 40 songs that I had to learn) ... but thats what I love to do.

Well we finished up the tour with Mystic Bowie yesterday with a film shoot for a music video for the title track of Mystic’s new CD “Never Kiss & Tell”. The film crew brought in 8 girls for the scenes and they shot a bunch of video using the tour bus.

I’m dead tired, been living on 3 to 4 hour sleep during the tour … but it was a great time. All the shows were sold out and all in attendance loved Mystics new material, sold over 500 CD’s.

The band was smoking and tight, it was great to play with a group of guys that could interact with each other, painting a landscape of different textures during the song … and then bring it back to the original groove in a heart-beat, some very special moments are created … which make all the hard work worth it.

We played Lucky Man and Fan Fare for the Common Man with Keith Emerson, John Lee Sander sang Lucky Man and did a great arrangement for it … it was smoking, John Lee was on piano and vox, I was on Hammond and Keith was playing synth (Moog patch) … I don’t get to play with multi-able key players very often, much less 2 monster players like John Lee and Keith … it was sweet and the crowd went wild. Keith pulled me aside at the end of the night and said it was a great pleasure to play with all monster players that I got to attend the show … he was on cloud nine.

We had an after party at the penthouse where Keith was staying (1500 a night, beautiful place) and John Lee and I did a sweet version of “Whiter Shade of Pale” and Keith played some classical stuff on the grand piano that was there … great stuff, we played until 5 am … what a night.

I was glad when Thursday night was over … it was a lot of work for me playing with so many bands and trying to stay focused and “get up” for the show after so little sleep the night before..

The rest of the tour was typical … up at 9 am .. get coffee then head out to the next venue, stop for breakfast around noon, get to the venue and load-out and set-up around 4pm … do sound check at 5pm, have something to eat and then sit around until show time, play 2 sets ranging from 1 to 1 ½ hrs, sometimes 2hrs on the 2nd set, pack-up, load-out and have a few beers in the bus before bed (2:30 to 3:30 am ) … so we can get up at 9 am to do it all over again.

Hope to have some pictures soon ... I never took one picture during the trip ... I was too busy with, tour mamagment, driving duties, coordinating with the sound engineers and venue owners.

I hope you are keeping memoirs regarding this as it would be fascinating stuff to read for people Ron.

Anyway, great stuff for you. Ready to do it all again in the next few months I'm certain.
