So, I mentioned passively in another thread that I had joined a second band. An all-originals band doing progressive rock/metal. Music I love.

Anyway, our band leader put us up on SignMeToRoadRunnerRecords:

We have three tracks up. Track 2 ("Eyes of Silence") is pretty representative of the new stuff we're doing. Ryan might even like it...

Had practice again last night with these guys (I am now a formal member - rock on) and I just love playing with these guys and playing this music.

Well, first off...Very good quality.

But, to be honest, I got pretty bored about halfway into each song

I liked it Colors.
For some reason it sounds very familiar to a band I always hear on a local radio station, cannot remember the name but next time I hear them I'll listen up.

Of course you know I am going to say this right? Drums might as well be next door. :D

Anyway really nice to hear some of the stuff going down at your end.
Much luck with it.

Chippy.

Yeah, so the mix ain't perfect. I don't care. I'm here for the song, & the arrangement.

I must say that "The Eyes Of Silence" is a pretty damned good tune. It's complicated, but just enough to keep it interesting, & not overly so. I like the changes in this. They flow well, & the musicianship seems very tight.

Very good work, CF! I'd be proud to be involved with this, man! You should be, too.

Thanks guys!

The mix - that's just what Josh has available to him (he's our leader and chief songwriter). I think, for the equipment he's got, he's done a fabulous job. He wants to be a producer; I think he could do it. What he's done with the limited equipment he has is amazing to me.

The playing is Josh; I came in a few weeks ago and all this stuff was already recorded. I'm just learning it now, learning the rhythm and leads and adding stuff where I'm allowed.

Josh is as good of a guitar player as I've ever been around. And as for leads; this is the simple stuff. Josh has some really amazing, complex and very melodic solos on some of the other songs. I wish he'd put them all up because I think the three songs he's posted so far do not do his playing justice.

Go here and check out the song called "Down the Road":

http://www.myspace.com/audianrock

The song starts to build about halfway through and then Josh has this two-part solo at the end; the first half is technique and shred, the second half is one of the most melodic and powerful solos I've ever heard...

I'd be proud to be involved with this, man! You should be, too.

I definitely am Philby. Man... I am so glad I answered these guys' ad... Been thrilled to work with them so far.

Great tunes Colors, but my favorite was "The Trapped" although all of them were very listenable.

"Down the Road" is most excellent too. The guy definitely has some licks. You gotta learn all those, or will you just be adding another guitar to the arsenal?

I am 2nd guitar. Almost all of our songs are written with two guitars in mind, so Josh and I play different parts quite often and it adds a lot of texture to what we're doing. And then one of us is playing rhythm while the other is doing a solo. We've added a keyboardist as well, which may not be evident on most of those tracks, and so we have a really full sound. I love it.

As far as solos go, I've been handed a few of the solos on various songs. Josh is real good about throwing me bones. I am in the process of learning the solos that Josh wants me to play. The really technical stuff is clearly in Josh's domain - he's a much better player than I am. I'm looking at going back and taking some lessons again and trying to improve my technique; I really want to be able to play as well as Josh does.

Colors, very Opeth-like, with some Metallica vocals towards the middle. I like the style. Looking forward to hearing more.

kudos,
Chris

I've got to say I expected better from someone who judged my demo so harshly...

The singer is interesting... definitely the best thing about the band. The guitar playing is a bit boring though. I didn't hear much besides acoustic chord strumming on the 1st two songs... my aunts do that stuff for the church folk group. The 3rd song was clearly the best of the 3, it sounded like a Tooll song. I would hardly call this stuff progressive metal though.

I am merely judging the songs posted on that link, if I had been judging the 2 songs you have on your actual profile it would have been much, much worse... and you said I had a long way to go.
