Both.

I'm with Kramer; the death metal stuff where it sounds like they're throwing up in their mouth - I can live a dozen lifetimes and never need to hear that again.

Thrash Metal - i.e. Anthrax, etc... not so much. Too repetitive and boring.

Megadeath = posers. Mostly I just hate Dave Mustain; I think he's an ass. If his ego wasn't so freakin' huge I think they would have been a great band, but he was so set on being the center of attention and the simple fact is - the guy can't sing for sh*t. If they ever would have got a real lead singer I could have been a big fan.

But the worst thing was the Marshall amps... man... they sound so WEAK compared to the Boogies of Metallica and Dream Theater. I don't know what Mustain was doing to their Marshalls, but he made them sound so thin...

I've always been a Metallica guy. Loved the early albums: Ride the Lightning, Master, Justice... And unlike a lot of people, I absolutely loved the Black Album. That was the first major album that made me really want to start playing guitar. But I was pretty disappointed with everything from that point on.

I liked Dream Theater's "Train of Thought" - which I think is probably the most "metal" album they've done. But my preference for their music lies in their progressive rock material; LaBrie just isn't a metal vocalist. He's much better as a rock singer.

Mostly, what bugs me about metal is the boring repetition. That's why I liked Metallica - they took a progressive edge. Justice... is such an awesome album that way, with all the different riffs they cram into the songs, and all the different directions they go. They made metal interesting with that album.

Whats metal? Whats heavy metal? Whats hard rock?
Who has the crayon that draws the blurry lines of distinction?
Whats he been smoking?
Why wont he share with the rest of us?

I think I'm right in the middle.

A lot of the stuff I like isn't exactly classified as 'metal', but it's metal influenced. You know... lots of heavy, chugging guitar riffs, but it's not quite as polished or technical as metal.

Two of the bands I like would be considered metal... TROUBLE and CANDLEMASS, but otherwise, I can't say I listen to much straight metal. I used to listen to lots of thrash and death metal, but now I'm mostly into heavy 'alternative' rock.
